Life skills that I wish everyone knew

5 Things I Didn't Learn In College
Graham Davis

When we're kids, we're told that going to college is almost crucial. We're also told that we are going to learn the skills that we need to survive as young adults in the real world. As I reach the end of my college career, I'm starting to realize how my higher education has not prepared me for the start of adulthood. The common sense things, the things that are essential to living on your own, are not things that I have specifically learned in college. Here are a few things that we should all know, but we did not/will not learn in college.

1. How to cook

I realized when I moved into my own house that I had little experience cooking for myself. When I finally figured out that I was going to be doing this every day, I decided it was time to master the art of cooking. Why don't we ever study cook books in class? I think this would be beneficial.

2. How to fill out tax forms

I mean, honestly, those things are confusing. I hope to one day not have to rely on my parents for help when I fill out my tax forms. But until that day, I will continue to confuse myself looking at them and then asking my mom to lend a hand.

3. How to fix my car

This is such an important skill and I respect all of the people that decide to go into the mechanic profession. When I open up the hood of my car I cannot make heads or tails of it and I really wish I could. I didn't learn how to jump start my car in a class at my university, but rather by my step-father teaching me when I got my license. I still know a lot of people well into their 20's that do not know how to jumpstart a vehicle.

4. How to properly grocery shop

Grocery shopping is sometimes a challenging task. There's too much temptation to buy things that you do not need and spend a large sum of cash on food that won't provide you with a full balanced meal.

5. Money management

This goes along with grocery shopping. It is sometimes hard to manage money on your own, and no one teaches you how to balance a check book in a college class. Typically, money management is something you learn on the fly, outside of school.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
