Although I cannot say I loved 100 percent of my boarding school experience (sit-down dinners, sign outs, boring weekends…) but there are definitely some aspects that I miss dearly. After almost being done with my freshman year at college, I certainly can say I miss my boarding school, especially these.
1. Dorms.
I spent my 4-years of high school living in dorms. Dorms were a small community of girls and dorm parents who would provide medicine when you're not feeling well, baked goods for helping you getting through 8-10 p.m.study hall, and resource as an adult. Living with your dorm-mates meant you could borrow a dress for tomorrow or secretly order pizza during study halls.
2. Dress code.
Yes, although I hated not being able to wear a pair of leggings, a t-shirt, or sneakers to school, I sometimes miss how decent I looked during high school. I hated getting 'dress-coded' so much, but I enjoyed planning my outfit ahead and figuring out ways to slightly go out of dress-code. I felt prepared in my dress-code outfits, and dress-code helped me to be in study mode.
3. After school activities.
I hate practice..
I was not a sports girl, and still am not. But, the memories I made with my teammates and coaches in JV-B basketball team were great. For me, I loved working on school publication after school. Going to the newspaper office, playing dome music, eating snacks with friends, and of course, working on the publication was so much fun. Some people might have played hockey, practiced the guitar, or worked in a ceramic studio, but I know everyone loved their after-school activities.
4. Small classes.
Being in small classes with less than 20 people meant personal connections with teachers and active discussions within the classes. I could go over math problems during extra help time before 8 a.m. classes, or just personally talk to them about life.
5. People around you.
It's technically a giant 4-year slumber party...
Being in a small school meant you know every student and every teacher. Teachers were your coaches, dorm parents and advisors. You could rely on your dorm-mates after a long day of classes and practices. You could walk down the hallway and recognize familiar faces. It was comforting to live with people you trust and love, and that community probably is what you miss the most from your boarding school.
