As summer break is finally upon us students, it feels like we have all the time in the world to be with the ones we'll miss before departing to college and going in different directions. But the truth here is that we only have a few months before we really have to say goodbye. To enhance the nostalgia here, brainstorm with me for a moment. Think about how great your friends are and how long they've been with you.
Remember how you all spent your birthdays when you were together for them. Realize how they probably know more about you than you know about yourself. Think of your favorite memory with them. Your friends right now are the ones you've grown up with, the ones that have seen you at your best and worst, and the ones who have shared memories with you that you probably won't share with anyone else.
Now, remember how you're leaving for college in August. Do you really know the next time you'll see them after you leave? For those of you that happen to be going to the same college as your best friend, I envy you. And for those of you that are going to a different college as your BFF, we're in the same boat. For as much as we wish to be with our best friends in college it is, unfortunately, time to go our separate ways and see what the world has to offer. With that being said, there are still some things I would like my best friend to know while we're apart.
1. Have fun.
Even though I can't physically be with you to experience all the cool things you will do throughout college, I want you to have as much fun as possible. College is the time to be free and learn new things, so enjoy yourself. With that being said, I expect to hear all of your stories.
2. Be yourself.
Going away to college is kind of like starting over, which can be a little bit frightening... or a lot. But please don't ever be scared to be yourself; it's my favorite version of you.
3. Don't be afraid to make new friends.
Once you start to show people who you are, I have no doubt that you will attract people that want to get to know you. It's okay to create and move on to new friends at college, just don't forget that I'll be here when you come back home to visit.
4. Don't forget to stay in touch.
I want to hear about the annoying girl in your ethics class, the jerk that lives two dorms down from you, how your classes are going, and how you miss the food back home. These things may not seem that relevant, but the point is that I want to hear about all the rants you have and how you're doing to let me know that you're okay.
5. Always remember that I love you.
If you're ever having troubles with classes, struggling to readjust to your new environment, or just miss home, please remember that I love you and I believe in you. I may not be in the same school or state as you, but I will always be supporting you as my best friend to accomplish everything you set out for.
