1. Having my own room
I got lucky; I love my roommate and our room feels homey, but I will always miss my room at home. It's hard not to miss the complete privacy and extra space to yourself, and with a dorm room that always feels cluttered, I dream about my neat and clean room back home.
2. My car
I love my car and I love to drive. In high school I was always the one offering to drive places and when I was bored or upset or stressed, sometimes I would just drive around and listen to music. Sadly, I don’t get to do that anymore. While my car sits miles away in my driveway, I like to think it misses me too.
3. The food
Anyone who has sat down at one of my family dinners knows that my parent’s cooking is the absolute best. The food at Penn State is good but it will never come close to my home cooked meals. The dining hall food gets repetitive and it feels like the majority of the food downtown is unhealthy. I can feel myself gaining the freshman 15 every time I order. Whenever I'm headed home, I'm more excited to hit all my favorite restaurants than I am about anything else. Especially coming from New York, I feel like the pizza, sushi, and bagels that I get anywhere else are just ok.
4. My shower
The shower situation in college is not as bad as I anticipated, but it's never ideal for 20 girls to share one shower. I also just can’t wait to shower at home without my shower shoes.
5. My Parents
At home my parents do so much for me and now that I am at college and on my own I have to do everything for myself. I have to find the time not only for school work and the usual things I used to worry about, but now I also have to find time to do laundry, clean my room, and make sure I have something to eat for dinner. They kept track of the things that I couldn’t and made my days much easier and less stressful. Once you are on your own you have all of the same responsibilities plus the ones that your parents normally took on for you. It’s a lot, and it’s easy to forget something on your own when there’s so much to do in a day. I’m sure this is how my parents felt every day but I couldn’t appreciate it until a month had passed of me doing it on my own.
I love college, but there’s definitely a lot to miss about home.
