I love to watch movies especially older ones that I have not seen in awhile although some of these I have seen numerous times. However, they still never get old and I can always pick out something I never noticed before, and that is the sign of a great movie. I love to watch movies to go with the season. So while it is still summer for a little bit longer, and you’re sitting at home with your ice cream went one of these movies. Without further ado, here we go in chronological order:
1. "Jaws" (1975)
A classic film that is a must see. Roy Scheider stars as Brody who works for Amity Police and is the only one to believe that a massive great white shark could be purposefully coming after their picture perfect vacation town, Amity Island. The music is down by John Williams and the theme will haunt your mind for days after the movie. You would probably recognize the theme even if you have not seen the movie. There are moments to make you tear up with the little boy on the raft, Alex Kintner. There are moments to make you laugh, three men on the boat setting out with the goal of killing a great white and they have some great one liners in their scenes. As well as moments to make you jump with fright. You have been warned.
2. "National Lampoon’s Vacation" (1983)
This is just one you really need to see to believe. The Griswold family trip is one disaster after another while they are on their way to California to see Marty Moose at Walley World. Every family has their Griswold moments. Like Ellen says in the movie “But with every new day there's fresh hope.” Their family trip across country is anything but a vacation in simplest terms. Lots of hysterical lines that my family and I still quote to this day, and this is the first of the series so you have the rest of the movies to look forward to for more laughs. Pay special attention the lines by Roy Walley, you would not be able to say that in a movie today and what famous historical figure he looks like. I’ll give you a hint Marty Moose, pretty similar to Mickey Mouse if you ask me. One last thing, if you do not appreciate foul language for effect then do not watch this movie. I can tell you that you will be missing out. Also, the song “Holiday Road” by Lindsey Buckingham is played in all of the movies except European Vacation.
3. "The Man In The Moon" (1991)
This is the film debut of Reese Witherspoon. She is just adorable with that well known heart shaped face. She plays Dani who is starting to grow up and develops a crush on a friend on the family’s son. She is head over heels until she falls for someone else a little too close for comfort. I will give you a hint they share the same DNA. This movie is great and the ending gets me every time. I first saw this movie at the beach late at night with my sister and our family friend. We will never forget the ending or how we felt when it happened. Go watch this movie, it is a great film! Even Roger Ebert gave it four stars.
4. "Captain Ron" (1992)
One of my Grandpa’s favorites. He recently passed but the movie was still on the shelf in the basement. The movie is kind of wacky and Kurt Russell who is Kate Hudson’s stepdad is an absolute nut as Captain Ron. It is a lot of fun and I thought it would be cool as a kid to be on a boat of that caliber. There is swearing and in particular a line that my sister always laughed at as a kid “We’re gonna ******* die!”. Watch this movie for great laughs and an adventure!
5. "The Sandlot" (1993)
A famous flick that I am sure most people have seen at one point or another. I think this is one you need to watch every year. It is thought of as just a kid movie but there really are a lot of moving parts. One of them is to just remember what it was like to be a kid in the summer time. No job to get up and go to yet. Every day consisted of just playing all day till dinner time with your friends. However, it shows us that the friends you thought you would have forever you will wake up as an adult to find that you have drifted away. You used to spend every single day together and now you just are not best friends anymore. You all have grown up and chose different paths for your lives.
Enjoy these summer movies while it is still summer time with sunshine.
