These struggles are strictly mediocre, but they are struggles nonetheless. As a brown man, I can assure you that these are factual things that happen to us, and besides wanting to become doctors, engineers, and lawyers, we're mistaken for the rest of these too. Don't be the person to assume things from watching Aziz Ansari standup or binge-watching Masters of None. Our struggles are unreal, but you'd want to let people know if you were constantly hit with ignorant remarks, jokingly or otherwise.
1. We're mistaken for being Indian.
India is not the only brown nation. There is Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
2. Many other brown people we know have the last name Patel.
I know a lot of Patels and I love them all.
3. People assume we adorn tikka between our eyebrows.
Yes, we do sometimes, but this is a sacred sign of blessing only applied to wish someone the best.
4. You get hit with a "namaste" when old white men are feeling cultural.
Sorry dude, I'm not Hindu but many of my friends are, and they'd be offended too if they heard you say "namaste" to another brown man.
5. Your Muslim name might confuse people.
If you look awfully Indian but your name sounds awfully Arab, this may be confusing to some.
I hope reading this made you laugh because as brown people, we are constantly hit with these stereotypes in real life.
