As an honorary Ithaca College student, you know how awesome the school is. It’s super-pretty in the fall and in the spring, it has great professors and an awesome downtown. Even if you’re a freshman, you’ll figure out all of the great things about the college by the time you leave here. However, there are also a bunch of struggles that we students face on a day-to-day (and season-to-season) basis.
Here are a few struggles that we all know a little too well.
1. The Lovely Service Known as MyResNet.
I’m sure all of you have dealt with the Wi-Fi service on campus known as MyResNet. Not only is it very temperamental on its good days, it always has a cute way of becoming obnoxiously slow during the class sign-up week. We all know too well the Hunger Games-esque blood bath that it is to trying to get all the classes you want, and if ResNet is down that day, or god forbid, it’s slow, you may not get into the classes you were dreaming of. It sucks. It’s absolutely the worst. However, on the days that it is working smoothly, be sure to thank the ResNet gods because maybe they will help you out during the times when you need it the most.
2. The Well Known T-CAT
I’m sure everyone has had the chance to be a part of the T-CAT experience by now. It is a much-needed service on campus for those who don’t have cars or upperclassmen friends. This service definitely comes with a cost, though. Not only is it kind of expensive to ride, but it is notorious for being late. Not by like one or two minutes, though, sometimes 15 minutes, which can really suck if you are trying to catch a transfer. Not to mention it's the “Drunk Bus“ on weekends. Those are the worst. They are loud, smelly and just not a joy to be on. Especially if you are just trying to get home from a late night movie. However annoying the bus is, or if it’s late, or any other thing went wrong, please continue to thank your driver. They have to deal with everyone being annoying, saying thank you to them might make their day.
3. The Online Wonderland Known as HomerConnect
This is a great website that is full of a ton of resources that are extremely helpful. However, during class registration and housing selection (a shout-out to those who just recently went through the housing crisis of 2015) this website can be the bane of a student's existence. There are a ton of times where it shuts down, closes out or just doesn’t register the fact that you clicked the submit button. I’m definitely not shaming the website’s resources because they really are helpful but drat, I understand the struggles that we feel every time we try to sign up for classes at the same time as everyone else in that time slot.
4. The Glorious Season Known as Winter
If you have lived in Ithaca already, you don’t even need to read this to know what I’m going to say. Winters in Ithaca suck. They are cold, full of snow, just a frigid, bitter, not-great wonderland. Props to those of you who love winter! I’m just not a fan of snow whipping into my face on my walk to campus. It’s not fun to me at all. Sometimes the temperature gets so low, no amount of clothing makes it better. Not to mention that it can snow so much in one night that your knees might come in contact with the snow if you walk out there before the plows come through. The plows definitely take their time to get to the campus in the winter, so please be careful. It’s just a not fun season.
5. The Walkways in the Winter Known as Slippery Death Trap,
They deserve their very own struggle number. The roads are so unbelievably slippery in the winter. I can’t tell you how many people I have seen slip and fall on their way to class. It is extremely dangerous if you aren’t wearing boots that can protect you. Please beware the floors on the bridge to Whalen in the winter are also so slippery, it’s extremely dangerous. Beware, my friends. Don’t succumb to the dangerous pavement.
Now that I have slammed Ithaca College, there are a ton of great redeeming qualities of this school that make it the best place in the world (to me at least). This school is just so fun and interesting. There are also a ton more struggles that we go through on a daily basis, but hey, we can work through them for the next few years!
