There are many different types of curly hair. They are categorized into patterns. There is 1, 1A, 1B, 1C, 2, 2A, 2B, 2C, 3, 3A, etc... But no matter what pattern your curly hair is, it no doubt has left you frustrated at least once in your life. When people compliment us on our curly hair they usually expect a response of, “Thanks, but I wish I had straight hair.” And while that is sometimes true, we don’t actually hate our natural curls. We just wish that sometimes they weren’t as frustrating.
1. Bad Hair Days
Everyone has bad hair days. But bad hair days for people with curly hair can try your patience like nobody’s business. You try braiding, bun-ing, twisting, and even putting your hair under a hat. But everything you try just makes your hair frizzier and frizzier. In the end you are left with a hairstyle you’re not happy with a about half of your hair lying in hairballs on the floor.
2. Wash Day
Who doesn’t love the feeling of getting in the shower and lathering shampoo down into the roots of your hair? It’s freeing to finally get under the grease, grime, and product that been sitting on your scalp. But after you’ve been massaging and rinsing your hair in the shower, you are left with the inevitable: tangles and knots. The strands of your hair just love to mingle. And what better way to do that than entangling and intertwining with all the other strands on your head? You don’t want to comb your hair (everyone knows it’s a sin to brush curly hair) but those knots need to go. Next time, you swear you’ll use a shower comb.
3. Hairstyles
The world of hairstyles is vast and ever growing. After doing the same five hairstyles a week, you’re bound to want to venture out and try something new. If you have a looser curl pattern your chances of finding new styles are pretty good! But if your curl pattern is tighter, it’s going to take a while to find something you like. But fear not, for if at first you don’t succeed, try again!
4. Products
Finding products for your hair is always a challenge. You must have tried at least 20-30 different products on your hair trying to find the right one. You’ve tried ones that have made your hair sticky. You’ve thrown away the ones that made your hair crunchy. You’ve rejected the ones with the funny smell and you’ve run from the ones that cost more than $7. But, little by little, you’ve found what works for your hair. That product is your pride and joy. Maybe it defines your hair. Maybe it tames the frizz. Whatever miracle that product works for you, pray that they never discontinue it.
5. Cutting and Trimming Your Hair
The fear of having your hair cut is quite common. But to me personally, those with curly hair have been dealt a rough hand. We tell the barber to only take off a half inch, just enough to get rid of the dead ends. We leave the shop with three inches of our hair missing and tears in our eyes. Why do barbers hate us? But when you find that one special barber who takes off exactly what you said and can cut your hair when it’s curly, you’ve found a keeper. You hold tight to that barber. Hold tight and never let go.Through all the frustrations and hair ripping, you can still find something to love about your curls.
