If you have been a fan of stand up comedy for years or just in the mood to laugh, I'm sure this list of unbelievable stand up specials and the hours of other specials waiting on the queue will bring the funny.
1. John Mulaney: New In Town (2012)
From the mind that brought you SNL’s Stefon, John “Mulaney’s New In Town” is a highly quotable and rewatchable special that will have you rolling. John Mulaney is one of the best comedians working today, whose self-deprecating, observational, and autobiographical humor is fresh and unstoppable.
2. Zach Galifianakis: Live at the purple onion
Before “The Hangover”. Before “The Hangover Part II”. Before “The Hangover Part III”! This special shows Galifianakis in his natural state, on a stage behind the piano, while belching into a microphone. It is the essence of the foolish genius we all know and love with an interwoven documentary of his twin brother (played by Galifianakis) and the then unknown star traveling across the country in a old VW Bus, this is more than a stand up special: it is an experience.
3. Mike Birbiglia: My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend
Honest and hilarious. That’s how I would describe the comedy of Mike Birbiglia. His approach to comedy is through story telling and he can tell the crap out of a story. By the end of this special you’ll fell like you have known Birbiglia for years and when you watch some of his other work it’ll feel be like seeing an old friend.
4. Hannibal Buress: Animal Furnace
Yes his name is Hannibal and yes he is without a doubt one of the funniest and original comedians you will ever see. Known for his role on the “Eric Andre Show”, Buress’ dry and insightful observations about the small and big things in life are without a doubt some of the most memorable material you will see on the queue. This special is worth your time.
5. Anthony Jeselnik: Thoughts and Prayers
Jeselnik is unforgiving and unashamed of his comedy. It is not for the faint of heart and he does not care. His material is raw and will make you rethink the limits of what can and cannot be said on stage. It is shocking, brilliant, and will make you feel like a better person after watching.
