5 Songs For Summer
Amanda Heys

With summer just around the corner for students everywhere, it may be a little difficult getting into the summer mood after studying for final exams. When you think of a favorite summer memory, what tends to come to mind? For some it's a family trip to the beach, for others it's laying by the pool or spending time with friends. But something you might not focus on in your trip down memory lane is the happiness that comes from certain summer songs. Music has such a powerful impact on the human mind; not only can it impact a person's mood but it also brings people together and can serve as a link to a seemingly forgotten memory. Hearing an old song can bring a flood of memories, good or bad. So if you're somewhere cold and rainy, or simply not feeling that into summer this year, listen to some of these songs and see if they help get you into that blissful positivity of summer sunshine.

1. "Falling" by HAIM

The opening song to the first ever album of these three sisters, "Falling," is a perfect transitory track. The entire album is brilliant but "Falling" is definitely one of the highlights. A cool mix of alternative instruments and interesting beats, you won't get bored and it's a great pick-me-up.

2. "Summer" by The Courteeners

A great feel-good song to listen to on summer night drives with friends, "Summer" will leave you smiling and humming along to the catchy tune. The Courteeners are an English indie rock band, but don't let that scare you away. This track is bound to offer an atmosphere worthy of the sunny season.

3. "Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit of...)" by Lou Bega

Released in 1999, "Mambo No. 5" is an oldie goldie. With simple lyrics and a groovy beat, if this track can't make you at least tap your toes, you should see a doctor. If you're in need of a song to get the party going, this is sure to get people moving.

4. "T-Shirt Weather" by Circa Waves

Released in 2015, "T-Shirt Weather" is a perfect tune for jamming out under the sun. Circa Waves is a new up-and-coming British band formed in 2013 and quickly making headlines. Reminiscing over past his youthful summer days with someone he loves, lead singer Kieran Shudall easily combines a sense of nostalgia with a toe-tapping, beach-y feel.

5. "Heroes" by David Bowie

Finally, a classic, slower song to sing with your friends around a campfire or driving down a highway late at night. Bowie's timeless voice brings a hopeful tone to this nostalgic ballad. Everyone experiences that one, perfect moment when you're sitting around friends, completely happy and content with where you are at that time. Those are the moments that stay with you through your life and "Heroes" is a perfect track to make memories with.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
