One of the hardest parts about telling people where I'm from is that most have never heard of it. Here's 5 signs you're from one of those places too.
1. Your vocabulary includes words only people from your hometown know the meaning of.
One of the most awkward things I encounter is using words that my friends don't know the meaning of. Getting those weird looks followed by a confused "what?" is probably my favorite part. Then I have to follow up with explaining that my friends from home say it all the time and make a mental note to myself that I should exclude it from conversations.
2. When saying where you're from, you say it like a question.
"Where are you from?" is actually my least favorite question to be asked. I already know that who ever is asking is going to have no idea where I'm talking about, so when I tell them the name of my city, I always make sure to add a question mark at the end. After they admit that they have no clue where that place is, I follow up with mentioning how far I am away from the closest big city.
"It's like an hour south of Tampa..."
3. There's an instant connection when you meet someone who's from the same place.
I swear this is one of the most exciting moments ever. I never plan on meeting anyone who even knows where I'm from, so it's a pleasant surprise when I meet someone who shares the same struggles as I do. There's nothing like talking about your hometown problems with someone who actually understands them.
4. Getting a snapchat filter was a HUGE deal.
I remember the first day my city got a snapchat filter. I don't think there was one person I know who didn't use it. All everyone could think was "WE MADE IT!". This was a milestone for my small little home.
5. You realize there really is no place like home.
Despite the fact that I grew up with the desire to get out of my hometown as fast as I could, I know there's no place that will ever compare. Going back home makes me realize all the unique things about my city that I will never find anywhere else. I really learned to appreciate the little things about the place I call home.
