The heart friend is the pinnacle of friendship. It’s something that everyone seeks and few people uncover throughout the tumultuous journey that is life. Heart friends are born out of a variety of situations. So whether you’ve been joined at the hip since birth or you just met a year ago at an on-campus event, you can be guaranteed that they’re your heart friend if...

1. They Put You First.

Friendship is all about give and take, but like all things in life, this rule can (and, in some cases, should) be ignored under certain circumstances. If you can go to them in a time of crisis and fully trust that they will drop everything to get you through the day, they just might be your heart friend.

2. They Ask You.

When faced with tough times, you might run to them. But do they come to you when the tables are turned? If you have ever received the “S.O.S.” text from them and immediately hopped in the car, tissues in hand, they might be your heart friend.

3. They Love You Shamelessly.

Even at your worst, they cherish your presence. If you are wandering around town in your grungiest of tees with obviously unkempt hair, they will still walk confidently at your side and they will proudly escort you out of parties when your cup has run dry—for the tenth time. If they value your friendship while in PJs as much as they value it in heels, they might be your heart friend.

4. They Read Your Mind.

If you often find yourselves landing on the same thought, or you frequently get a text exactly when you need one, you probably have a keeper on your hands. An organic chemistry that generates compelling conversation and immense amounts of comfort is a giveaway; they might be your heart friend.

5. You Can't Imagine Life Without Them.

If you’ve ever been struck with the realization that you could not survive without them around, they might be your heart friend.

And if you are ever overcome with the desire to pick up the phone and tell them that you love and appreciate them, do it. Because they are your heart friend, and they deserve to know it.
