Who is your favorite Seattle artist?? Macklemore is undoubtedly a go-to, but it’s time you checked out the rest of Seattle's indie and soul music scene, which is thriving more than ever before. Pulled from various sources, these artists are just a peek at the endless catalog of Seattle music. Listen in to 90.3 KEXP, your best source for local artists, and soon enough you’ll have an answer to that question.
KAIROS – Indie Pop
Lena Simon does it all: playing bass with La Luz, singing with the band Pollens, and playing drums with Mary Lambert. Kairos, is her own personal project, complete with “dreamy synthesizers juxtaposed with poppy, rhythmic drum beats and stabs of guitar.” Her songs just have an undeniably exhilarating vibe.
ALLEN STONE - Soul
Long wavy hair, geeky glasses, and awkward dancing? This artist isn’t Taylor Swift, but that doesn't mean he’s not just as good (or better even). Born and raised in Chewelah, Washington, Allen Stone began singing as a teen and when his friend Stacie Orrico hit success in music, he began recording his own music and touring cross-country. Featured in Neon Cathedral by Macklemore and guest appearing on Ellen, Conan, and mTV, his career has taken a great turn in the last 4 years, a much-deserved one.
FLY MOON ROYALTY– Soul
If you didn’t get the chance to see Action Jackson and Adra Boo at Bumbershoot last year, you should immediately get on seeing them live. Jackson’s electronic beats united with Boo’s sophisticated soul vocals create an unbelievable vibe that you can’t resist moving to.
THE FLAVR BLUE – Electronic
Hollis Wong-Wear, who is known for singing the female hook in White Walls by Macklemore, took a turn in her career from performing poetic spoken word to singing along with Parker Joe and Lace Cadence in The Flavr Blue. Their tone can only be described as the very seconds between the calm and the storm, with consistently calm vocals backed by variations in their synth and music. Very chill sounds.
Brothers From Another – RAP/HIPHOP
BFA has grown tremendously since their first EP, "Roots Seeds Stems" in terms of their musical style. Since then, they’ve collaborated with all sorts of artists like Sol, Sam Lachow, Asher Roth, Adra Boo, and Otieno Terry. The trio, Isaiah, Cole, and DJ Beeba, have definitely taken over Seattle with their new upbeat and feel-good EP, "This Summer." If you like Macklemore, Blue Scholars, or Sam Lachow, you’ll definitely love these boys.
Without a doubt, Seattle is filled with all sorts of talent. If you didn’t dig these artists, there are so many more just waiting for you to throw your water or bra at them mid-concert. Check out Seattle Mag’s list of Seattle artists or tune into KEXP to find more.
