As a Theatre Major, it's obvious to me why people would go to the theatre. Among my friends, it's just assumed. Recently, though, we were discussing in one of my classes the reasons that students not directly involved in the department give for not going to see the productions. Some said it's because they're too busy, because they don't understand the theatre or because they've never heard of the production, so they're not interested in coming.
I've written before about how we live in a world which is constantly on the move. Being a college student, I understand that there are a plethora of activities, people, and responsibilities competing for our attention at any given moment. That being said, one of the reasons theatre is hugely important to me is because it gives people a chance to take a break from all that and be present in a space together for a set period of time to share an experience. Here are some of the reasons why I feel, regardless of your major or your interests, you should come to see your college's theatre productions:
1. Theatre is an escape from reality.
With everything going on in the world right now, I think we all could use this. Theatre is different from going to the movies, or watching Netflix, or reading a book in that it forces you to pay attention to what is going on in front of you right now. This is your one chance to be whisked away into another world filled with other people's trials and triumphs. When I go to the theatre, I get to give myself permission to soak it all in without any distractions.
2. Theatre is the experience of reality.
This may seem to contradict number 1, but I don't think it does. I can't tell you how many fake-Midwest-nice conversations I have on a daily basis about nothing in particular. In the theatre, I get to experience truth and honesty and raw emotion in ways I don't often get in my day to day life. It is a study of the human condition unlike any other.
3. Also, you might actually feel something. And that's OK.
I could write a separate article about how our society teaches us that emotions should be suppressed at all costs. Theatre, on the other hand, encourages a healthy outlet of natural emotions by both the audience and the performers. It could even give you something to talk to your friends about later.
4. Supporting the arts is good.
When the arts are supported and funded, it makes for a better school and a better community. You will be more cultured, and a community of cultured individuals will thrive.
5. It's free/cheap.
Truly. In the "real world," live performances can be very expensive. If you're anything like me, you take full advantage of anything your college ID can get you. At my school, all Theatre Productions are free for students and most other productions are inexpensive. Take advantage while you can.
See you at the theatre.
