Working in the restaurant industry isn't always easy. Servers deal with so much disrespect it's not even cool. From cleaning some of the grossest messes you have ever seen to fixing an order when the COOK messes up, servers are always doing things that most people wouldn't do if someone's life depended on it. So here are five reasons you should always tip your server.
1. They make a little to nothing as salary.
Most servers make anywhere from two to five dollars an hour on average. That's less than minimum wage in most states. If a server gets paid biweekly and she only makes two dollars an hour and she works a 40 hour week that's only an $80 paycheck? $80 for a 40 hour week? That is bull poop. That's why you should always leave a tip. Your tip is apart of the means of this servers survival. Gas, food, clothing, toilet paper, these are all things that servers more than likely spend their tips on. You never know, your server could be in her last clean shirt because she needs laundry detergent and her gas is on empty because she's depending on these tips to provide for her and possibly her family.
2. Good costumer service isn't always an easy job.
Day after day servers have to deal with some of the most pretensions, rude people ever to live and even worse, the weird, gross, and flirty costumers. Yet, they still manage to keep a smile on their face and show good customer service. Some days the serving industry can make you feel so worthless. So if you see a smile on your servers face and she's nice and respectful make sure you tip her. Even if your server is not the happiest camper around, tip her anyways. You have no idea what her day has been like and who she has encountered in her section. She may even have something going on at home. What? Servers have real life problems too? Yes, so don't be another butt hole who doesn't tip your waiter or waitress. Ladies and gentlemen, NO, servers are not hitting on your spouse... it's called being nice. You can't have double standards. Either you want good service or you're gonna get monotone boring service because you're so insecure in your relationship that you think when someone flashes a smile while you and your spouse are ordering that means there gunning for your man or woman. No, were just doing our job. So its simple, regardless of how your service is you should always leave a tip. If the service was bad then fill out a survey or talk to a manager. Don't take away from these servers just trying to make a living.
3. Messed up orders are not usually your servers fault.
All too often servers are getting not only the blame for incorrect orders but the backlash as well. On average, a server probably gets around anywhere from fifty to several hundred costumers a day depending on their shift and how busy the restaurant that day is. As you're ordering, your waitress is writing your order down. That means how you order your dinner is the instructions the cook is getting. When you're a cook and you make the same chicken fried steak plate over and over your body starts relaying to muscle memory. So they can read the words " no gravy " and just by habit put gravy on your steak. There is no need to take it out on your server. They did their part. They wrote no gravy. They can't control the actions of others. Is gravy really a reason to not tip somebody? No, it's not. That goes for tomatoes, onions, etc.
4. Servers do way more than the average person is aware of.
Your server doesn't just take your order then goes and parties until its ready. Speaking from personal experience, they do way more than that. Most servers take your order and then enters it into a completely overly complicated and unnecessary system that sends the order to the cook. They do this to anywhere from 2 to 50 tables per hour. As they are doing this they refill your drinks over and over and over again, take finished plates out of the way, helps prepare your meal so that it gets out faster, cleans and buses tables, and more. So when your tipping your server, your tipping a hostess, cook, bus boy, janitor, cashier, all as one. Because your server is a little bit of all these things. Don't be a jerk. Tip your server a fair amount.
5. Your server is most likely a student or serving is a side job for extra cash.
Servers get talked down to more than almost anybody in other professions. No sir, I am not working here cause I failed out of the eighth grade and plan to work here all my life. I work here because I'm a student and need to provide for myself while I get an education to get my degree to get a good-paying job that I love. -said every server ever. When you tip a young server, your most likely tipping a future teacher, doctor, engineer, etc. So treating them poorly is just makes you look badly. I'll see you in six years when I'm a veterinarian and your dog is sick. Servers aren't worthless. So don't treat them like they are. So this next picture is what I've been trying to say this whole article. Tip your server!!!!!!! And to all the servers out there, keep doing what you do. There are people in the world who actually appreciate it.
