Ah winter, the season of blizzards and subzero temperatures, of snowfall and coziness and jingle bells. It ends our years and ushers in a new one in all its frozen grace. Now I know that lots of people beg for winter's end as soon as the first snowflake hits the earth, but this time of tundra has always been my one of my favorite seasons. Winter has such a magic to it; yes it has its brutal moments and you certainly have to be careful, but with precaution and the right positive attitude, winter can be an absolute blast. Here are just a few reasons why I love winter.
1. The holidays
Contained within the super cold season are some of the most fun times of the year--Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year's, Valentines Day, *cough* my birthday *cough*--and yes these times can be stressful too, but just being home with friends and family has a certain warmth to it.
2. The cold and being able to get warm from the cold
OK this might be a bit controversial, but hear me out--I actually like the cold quite a bit. There is something clean and refreshing about the cold that the winter brings, something rejuvenating almost when it first starts. However, even more than that, I love getting warm from the cold. Wrapping yourself in sweaters and scarves is super cozy and being able to go inside and curl up with a book and hot chocolate is incredibly comforting and it's a satisfaction that doesn't come unless you'd endured the cold first.
3. Snow is kinda awesome for the most part
Yes, snow has its moments of danger, especially when it comes to driving and the roads. However, this is why I urge caution--don't drive in a blizzard and if you absolutely have to, drive very slowly. Now aside from that, I think all our childhood selves would agree that snow is incredibly fun and has enormous power--like the one to get school cancelled for instance. Snowmen, snow angels, snowball fights-- some of my favorite memories from childhood involve playing in the snow and just having fun with my family and friends.
4. Winter is just kind of beautiful
OK, so I think whether you love or hate winter, we can all agree on one thing--there's something rather magical about that first snowfall. Or to wake up and see the world outside transformed, blanketed in pristine white, pocketed by footsteps and pawprints. You hold your breath for just a second in wonder before making a judgement one way or the other because the wintry world in front of you is simply beautiful.
5. It doesn't last all year
OK I'll admit it--if winter lasted all year I wouldn't like it nearly as much. Some of the magic lies in anticipation and also freezing temperatures all year sounds less than pleasant. Just as there is magic in the first snowfall, there is also a magic in flowers blooming again in spring. I really do love winter, however, and I'm excited for it to come into full swing in just a few weeks.
