Experts say 50%-70% of average college students change their major about 2-3 times. So, if you have changed your major or thinking about changing your major, here are some reasons why it is OK.
1. It determines your future:
First of all, this is the rest of your life we are talking about! If you see this is not the direction you want to be heading, then change it now while you can-the sooner the better! You do not want to get to the end of your last year and decide "hey, this is not what I want to start doing permanently in the next few months."
2. Struggling with a subject is not fun:
When I first changed my major, an old friend asked "Why are you taking the easy way out?" This is not the case. Sometimes we do get in a little over our head, and do not realize that this is not for you until you barely pass a couple of classes. Maybe the course load is too much for your personal life other than school. Do not think of it as taking an easy way out, but simply learning the hard way.
3. If it is not your passion then do NOT do it:
If you realize you are going to be miserable for the rest of your life, why would you stick with a major that you do not love and are passionate about? I am not saying that you are going to get out of bed every morning in a couple of years from now and love going to work, but you can at least save yourself from a lifetime full of misery.
4. You have changed as a person:
When you first picked your major you were most likely coming straight out of high school. If you look back to who you were then and who you are now, chances are you are almost a completely different person with a different outlook. That is OK! You have now had time to mature and explore your options.
To be honest, most of us in high school wanted to be some sort of doctor or business major just because that is all we thought was out there. When you get to college and start asking around and meeting with guidance counselors, you are introduced to a whole new list of majors you did not even know existed.
5. You are thinking of yourself:
If you are changing your major, 9 times out of 10 it is because you want to! You may have come into college with you major heavily influenced by family members or friends... or maybe because of the projected job outlook.
Yes, it is OK to get advice from friends and family but ultimately it is your decision. IT IS YOUR LIFE. Changing your major represents you are making a change to make yourself happy in the long run.
