They are a band made up of boys, and that's it.
So I know that everyone thinks that 5sos is a "boy band", but that just is not the case-- they are a band full of members who are boys, and that's it. They don't have choreographed and synced dances while performing. When they perform they don't sing to a back-up track. They don't wear matching outfits. This is just a small list of reasons why 5sos is NOT a boy band. I personally think 5sos gets this quote on quote boy band stigma because they opened for One Direction who in fact, WAS A BOY BAND, so everyone just assumes that since they opened for a boy band before they got big, they are one. I'm here to tell you that that is in fact false. I'm not sure if this one really counts as a reason to love them, but I just felt it necessary to clear this stigma up.
There are more songs than SLSP!
I know that SLSP ("She Looks so Perfect") was the first song that I ever heard from 5sos, and that's how a lot of people discovered them. But, there are so many more great songs than just that one! If this is the only song you have heard by them, give them another chance because just like fine wine, the writing abilities of the band have definitely gotten better with time. I have to admit, their self-titled debut album does have many cheesy/corny lines in it, but they have evolved, and the songs off of "Youngblood", 5sos's third #1 album, are lyrically beautiful and in my opinion better quality songs. Some recommendations if you haven't heard anything other than SLSP are: "Jet Black Heart", "Outer Space/Carry On", "Valentine", and "Why Won't You Love Me". Give those a listen and tell me you think they're not a good band.
The talent of the band members themselves.
Luke Hemmings. Calum Hood. Michael Clifford. Ashton Irwin. The names that make all of us "fangirls" giddy and excited. I don't know about you, but this is a talented foursome who in each way contributes so much to the band; if the band didn't have one of these members, it wouldn't be 5sos at all. Luke-- main singer and guitarist. Calum, bassist and singer. Michael-- guitarist and singer. Ashton-- drummer of the gods. They are extremely talented singers and musicians and they deserve your love. Not only are they talented, but they have such a great sense of humor with each other and the fans that is amazing to watch.
They are just as good live (if not better) than they are in the studio.
It's not often that you get an artist or a band who sounds as good live as they do in the recordings of their songs/albums. Let's just face it, musicians use auto-tune and voice enhancing tactics in the studio, and you can definitely tell that their "recorded voice" is nowhere close to their "live voice". I'm not sure if 5sos uses auto-tune, but if they do it's a small amount that is barely audible. They are such good live performers that sometimes they sound better live than they do in the studio recording! I personally have seen them once, but will be seeing them again in just a few short days, and let me tell you, I can't wait. With the slower, emotional ballads, you can hear the emotion pouring from them and I think that it transpires better with the live versions of their songs. If you have the chance to listen to them live at some point-- do!
They love their fans as much as you love them.
Every single member of 5sos loves their fans and is grateful for having people to listen to their music and truly appreciating them as a band. Some other artists/groups don't interact with their fans much, and also don't appreciate their fans. Well, if you're a fan of 5sos throw that out the window because they are very interactive, both as a band & their individual accounts, with fans on various social media, but mainly Twitter. They also love to make fun of their fans and tease them, but it is all for fun. They are never harsh or cruel to their fans, and I think that it makes them such a personable band. I sadly have never had the chance to meet them, but if you by chance stumble across them they are more than wiling to take pictures with their fans and talk to you for a few minutes. That couldn't be said for some musicians who ignore their fans when they stumble across them.
After reading this, I hope I have convinced you that 5 Seconds of Summer is more than just a band made of boy members, but an amazingly talented group of musicians who deserve everything they have accomplished.
