Now that I am older, there have been many times when I sit back and take a look at the family I have been so graciously blessed with. Two amazing parents and eight siblings to take the world on with. Once little kids running around the neighborhood causing havoc, to now being adults waiting until holidays and family events to run around and cause more havoc. But having siblings has taught me more than I could have imagined. So, here are five reasons why having siblings are just the best.
1. You always have a friend.
Growing up with siblings, the older ones are forced to hang out and play with the younger ones and even though the older siblings may act like they hate it, they enjoy being looked up to. They may pick on us little guys and tease us but in the end, they will always have our backs and never let us feel lonely.
2. We will always have our personal body guards.
Play time in a house with several children falling around the same age can get hectic. The older ones are picking on, the younger ones and the younger ones are tattle-telling. But the moment that an outsider begins to mess with one of us, they so learn they are messing with all of us. It's only OK for family to pick on family...or so I've been told.
3. What's yours isn't yours.
Learning to share is 101 when growing up with a lot of siblings. Your Barbie dolls aren't really "your" Barbie dolls and your clothes aren't really "your" clothes, especially if you and your sisters are close in size. But learning how to share doesn't just keep mom and dad sane, but it also teaches us how to live in a dormitory or have roommates when we finally move out.
4. Dinners are a lot more entertaining.
Dinnertime never has a dull moment in a large family household, especially as we get older. The company is great, and the conversations are priceless. It's a good way for us to all to be together in one place and share precious moments of our childhood together. It not only brings us joy and laughter, but it's also a good way to finally tell mom and dad what happened to their mailbox that summer.
5. You will always have someone to turn to for advice.
Having someone to turn to when you most need it is the best feeling in the world, but having eight someones to turn to is even greater. We may fight, a lot, but we never failed to be there for one another when it was needed.
I guess when you have siblings we never really grow up; we are still just those little kids learning how to share, but I wouldn't trade any of them for the world.
