Imagine it's 1:45 a.m. and you're hopelessly writing an eight page paper in Sociology or History or English that's due that day. Chances are you don't have to imagine that, because if you're a college student, that probably happened to you during high school.
I remember this exact thing. I came home from Track practice at 6 p.m.--dead tired. I stumbled into the shower, then ate, then sloppily but correctly prepared for my Chemistry lab the next day. After that I started an endeavor of 8 pages in Sociology. At 1:45 a.m. I had 5 done, but I needed to sleep. I slept until 4 only to stumble out of bed and strain my eyes in the blue light of Microsoft Word 2007. That day was awful, to say the least. Every teacher in 9 classes expects an enthusiastic effort that I just cannot provide. I'm sorry high school.
This, for those of you that don't know, illustrates the daily toil of a high school upperclassmen.
But here it is! College! We made it.
In writing this, I thought of five distinct reasons why college is absolutely better than high school.
1. College Applications
You've dealt with them, you were excited, but in the end you didn't want to fill out another one. You may not have to forever anymore. From the Common App to each institutions personalized "holistic" review of your profile, we've all grown to hate them, and we're glad to never touch them again for the next couple of years.
2. Nine Classes?
Maybe six... In a week. Maybe. Probably five though, and never really more than three or four in the same day. The days when you have a U.S. History test, Biology test, Spanish test, and an English presentation in the same day are over! First off you're not taking classes like that anymore, and absolutely never on the same day. Thanks, college.
3. A Real Social Life
You can meet people who are much different than you at college and learn so much from them. You can go out on the weekends, or you can stay in an do nothing, literally, no one will care either way. High School "get togethers" were so fun, though, I guess!
4. Sports! Sports! Sports!
If you attend a D1 like I do, there are always sporting events to go to or take part in. If you don't play for a D1, you could play in Intramural or Club sports which are both very competitive. A campus like UAlbany, too, has gyms everywhere, so you never have an excuse to get lazy!
5. Joining a club or organization
This, in my opinion, is the best part of college. You can literally create or join a club of anything or for any purpose. It's a really great way to get involved, meet new people, and ultimately make great friends. I have become so involved, simply because it's easy to, and because 'why not'!
College is great, and remember high schoolers, senior year of high school, too, is awesome in its own right, as long as you get where you want to go in the fall.
Thanks for reading!
Cheers.
