Journalism major or not, writing for your college newspaper can be beneficial to your college experience. It's a great way to get involved on campus and meet new people. You'll talk to many different people and hear various voices and opinions around campus as you complete interviews and gather information for your articles. It's also a great way to stay in the loop as to what is happening at your school. Here are five reasons why you should write for your college paper:

1. For the experience.

Writing for your college paper is a great opportunity to get a close look at how real-world newsrooms operate. You'll learn how to correctly and successfully craft together an article that tells a strong story in a collective and organized manner. You'll see just what it's like to be an aspiring writer.

2. To get a feel for the job.

What better way to jump in and explore journalism than by getting hands-on experience with the real deal on-campus workshop. You'll get to write stories on different topics, gain skills interviewing people for your articles and you'll practice time management while living by a deadline. It's a great way to see what the career is all about and maybe even find your college niche.

3. To build your portfolio.

If you're hoping to build a career in Journalism, one thing editors will be looking for is a resume full of experience. It's important to build up a portfolio during college and working with the college newspaper is the way to do so. If you are serious about journalism, use this time to write as many stories as you can to have a well-rounded collection of great clips to showcase your talents.

4. To stay informed.

Writing for the college paper is a good way to stay connected with what's going on around campus. It'll teach you to pay more attention to everyday moments, quotes and things that have the potential to turn into stories. It'll help you stay informed on different campus and world news and events.

5. It's fun.

Overall, working with a college newspaper is fun. You'll meet new people through your team and those you interview. You'll gain meaningful experience that is rewarding and worthwhile. I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
