I know I am hopping on this bandwagon a little late, but I am here to admit that I too have fallen victim to the undoubted cuteness of Auggie Pullman. After weeks of my two younger sisters begging, my family finally made the much-dreaded trip to the theaters to see "Wonder." Only five minutes into the film, I could tell that enduring the ticket line that trailed out the doors and the chaos of the concession counter was more than worth the journey.
To my delight, and a bit of surprise, "Wonder" offered much more than just a feel-good story about a spunky boy that overcame a tough battle. For several reasons, everybody should consider watching this film.
1. There's something for everybody
"Wonder" truly is a family film. When I say family film, I mean for whatever family means to you. With or without children or a significant other, "Wonder" is meant for you. Get it out of your head that you are too old/masculine/cool/etc. because you aren't. I saw "Wonder" with my parents, younger sisters and grandparents in a theater filled with all kinds of families. Every person left the film with a slightly different take but equally impacted.
2. Intersectionality
Okay, I know this one doesn't seem that important to everybody, but it should be! As for me, the incorporation of smart, kind, talented People of Color brought a smile to my face. For once, there is not a token Black person that serves as the comedic relief. I am not saying that there isn't still room for improvement, but I am happy to be seeing even the smallest of changes.
3. Challenges gender roles
Often when people hear talk of gender roles they become slightly uncomfortable. Although it may be a difficult concept to grasp, "Wonder" displays a world where the line between masculine and feminine is slightly blurred. I truly love this movie because so many of the male characters display an abundance of care and generosity for others. Rather than being shamed, boys show appreciation for each other, and their friendships are rewarding. Movies such as this one cause a shift in what we know as the norm.
4. A reminder that hate is learned
It is becoming increasingly clear that we live in a world where hatred is the standard. More than anything, "Wonder" reminded me that no child is born hating others. Acceptance is our default, but it is hate that must be learned. If we show nothing but kindness toward others, then hate becomes more difficult to digest. What better way to slip a good lesson into your child's day than through a movie?
5. It's just darn good
I can't say enough how much I love this movie! If you aren't looking for a meaningful film, watch it purely because it is entertaining. This is one bandwagon you want to hop on!
So, get out the tissues, take a couple Advil and put on your waterproof mascara because this one's a real doozy.
