For some people, Greek Life is something that they have always wanted to be apart of. For others, it never even crossed their mind. Even if joining a fraternity is the farthest thing from your mind, that doesn't mean you can’t be part of the fun.
1. Free Food
Let’s all be honest, free food is always a good thing. I know that for many people the promise of free food will flip your entire mood around. When it comes to Rush Week, fraternities are selling themselves to you and that means they are busting out the grill and their resident Grill Master to cook up some major good eats for the week. So why not stop by and snag a piece of steak or a taco during the ever popular Taco Tuesday?
2. It Gets You Out of the House
The worst thing in the world is sitting in your room with no homework and nothing to do, especially during the first few weeks of class. Rush Week gives you a weeks worth of activities and events after you finish the non-existent amount of homework that you have.
3. You Get to Explore the Area
Our university is home to people from all over the world, and by that I mean 90% of the people are either from Vegas or the Bay Area. With that being said, one could assume that you have absolutely no idea about the area surrounding the university. Rush Week gives you an opportunity to explore the surrounding neighborhoods where the fraternity houses are and it gives you a better sense of what’s around you. You also get a glimpse of where you may be living in the next two or three years which can be very exciting.
4. You Meet New People…So. Many. People.
Rush Week is a five day long event. Now, let’s assume that you go to a different house every day. Let’s also assume that the average chapter has about 50 members. You are, at a minimum, going to meet about 250 guys that you didn't know before, and that doesn't even include the other people that will also be there for rush and the girls that will occasionally drop by. So, we are talking upwards of 300 people that you could be shaking hands with. You may even like a few of them!
5. Maybe, Just Maybe, You’ll Think About Pledging
Of course you may go through the week meeting people, eating free food, and walking aimlessly through the university area and still not be sold on the whole Greek life thing. However, you may go through the week checking out houses and find that one house that you just click with. Maybe it's because they are killer at sports and you were an athlete in high school, maybe it’s because the majority of the members are in the same major as you and are just as passionate about the subject as you are, or maybe they like to play board games all the time and you are the king of Monopoly. Whatever the case is, you may go to a house and feel a bond with the group of guys there – a bond that becomes stronger during your pledge process before being solidified with your formal initiation. Who knows, you may find a house filled with guys that you can’t wait to call brothers.
