5 Reasons I'm Thankful for my Brothers

Brothers. You honestly can’t live without them, unless you only have sisters (in that case, I understand). In all seriousness though, while they can be a pain in the ass, if I didn’t have the privilege of growing up with my two older brothers, I undoubtedly wouldn’t be the same person I am today. I mean that in a good way. I know that everyone has a bias to favor their own brother(s) and claims they are better than any other brothers in the world, but I truly believe that mine are the cream of the crop. Although there are countless reasons why I’m thankful for them in my life, here are some of the top ones off of my list:

1. Sharing clothes? Not a problem.

I don’t know about you guys, but my brothers aren’t really into wearing knitted sweaters and leggings. I never have to worry about rummaging through my closet to find that one of them is wearing my favorite shirts. But, I definitely can admit to stealing a comfy hand-me-down long sleeve from them every now and then. And obviously, they don’t mind (I hope).

2. I've learned to be tough.

Trust me, I’ve had my fair share of injuries from one too many wrestling matches. And I might add that these quarrels were not initiated by me. Regardless, it’s safe to say that I can inflict pain where it counts. But physical strength is not the only thing I’ve learned. I’ve also learned to not be a drama queen because that certainly was unacceptable growing up. Besides, who would want to hang out with a sissy cry-baby anyway?

3. Competition = Perseverance

Especially in school, I always try to go above and beyond what my brothers accomplished during their own school careers. Why? Because they encourage me to do so. Basing my habits on their successes pushes me to be the best student I can be. Not only does this apply to school, but also within my family. If my brothers are spending time with my parents while I’m off doing whatever it is that I’m doing, it motivates me to go and be a part of the family; essentially, they make me more social and instill morals in me that never fade.

4. I have a much needed male perspective.

Let’s face it: girls may not always be honest when giving their opinion, particularly with clothing. Guys. in general, will tell you when you look like an idiot, a tramp, or just generally nice. My brothers especially have an insightful opinion on what I choose to wear. They’ll compliment me when I look nice but have no problem telling me when those jeans are just way too tight.

5. I always have two reliable best friends.

I didn't get to choose them myself, but if it were up to me, I wouldn’t change anything about them. They’re always there for me no matter what. Even if I text one of them at 3:00 in the morning, I can count on them to respond in less than ten minutes. But that’s not the only thing. Both of them are willing to go above and beyond just to put a smile on my face. Can anyone say that their brothers drove over three hours on Christmas Eve to adopt a kitten, bring her back home to wrap in a box and put her under the tree? Think what you must, but I call that love.

These two extremely inspiring individuals have and will always remain a source of constant support and positive influence in my life. I cannot thank them enough for being the unique, loving, and caring brothers that they truly are.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
