Why you should appreciate mom and dad.

5 Reasons To Love Parents Weekend

Going away to college is the first time many kids get away from living at home, which means that when parents weekend rolls around in mid-October, some might be dreading seeing their parents roll up to campus. On the other hand, others may be counting down the minutes until their family walks through their dorm room door. Either way, here are some reasons everyone should appreciate parents weekend.

1. FREE. FOOD.

Okay, I know the first thing on the list should be getting to see your family, but lets focus on what most college kids are missing most. Food that's good, and not from the dining hall! Most likely, your parents will be more than happy to take you out for, if you're lucky, MULTIPLE meals off campus. This means that you get good quality food, and you don't have to worry about your bank balance being $ -0.30 by the end of the weekend. Live large, and order that $25 steak, because, thank God, your parents are paying!

2. Compliments

College can get lonely, and we all sometimes feel like worthless pieces of trash running on no sleep and getting crushed by a constant stream of work. Have no fear, the minute your parents walk in the door they'll be so excited to hear about all the 'amazing' things you're doing. They love you, and miss you, and really want to have things to brag about . . . so you best believe they'll be eating up your stories about getting A's on your mid-terms. This comes with a showering of compliments, which will 100% boost your morale.

3. Money

If you went a little crazy with your spending the first few months of school, you're definitely in need of a refill on cash. THIS is where parents come in handy. Everyone knows college kids are broke, so they will most likely take pity on you and in addition to buying you things while they're here, leave you with some extra 'pocket money.' Thanks, Mom and Dad, now I can buy more tailgate clothes and go out to dinner instead of struggling to buy more easy mac!

4. Mobility

Your parents most likely rented/brought their cars, which means that freshmen unable to keep cars on campus can finally be mobile! Say goodbye to Uber for the weekend, and hop in your familiar, comfy car whenever you need to run to the grocery store or go to the mall. Bonus points if they let you drive!!

5. Showing Off

Much like #2, your parents coming shouldmake you happy, because it's amazing to get to show them where you've been living and how you're doing! Take advantage of how excited they are to see the campus and indulge in the activities! Take them to your favorite spots, tell them stories, and share your experience with them. It's a great bonding experience, and I promise they'll be so happy to share it with you!

So all I can say is, thanks for coming, Dad, and I can't wait for the next Parent's Weekend!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
