Sorry people who actually read my articles (thanks mom) but this week’s article is not going to be about politics or Leslie Knee. Due to the absolute lack of ideas and to the overwhelming Christmas spirit that has already taken me - this week’s piece is about christmas.
As someone who has spent Christmas in both Brazil and the US, the following list maybe be a result of a cultural mix but I believe it can still apply to most people.
Here are the reasons why Christmas is the best:
1. No School, no worries (except when you are applying to college and have to deal with the CommonApp, then I’m sorry)
No need to worry about finals or deadlines, all you need to de worried about is whether you are in the naughty list (but then again, who isn’t?).
2. TV Marathons of the Christmas episodes of your fav shows
Who doesn't love ScoobyDoo’s christmas episodes? What about all the Friend’s holiday specials? With Ross teaching Ben about Hanukkah? Or Phoebe singing one of her weird christmas song?Cmon!!!
3. You can’t get enough of christmas food.
In my country, where Thanksgiving is (obviously) not a thing, we eat turkey on Christmas and it’s wonderful. It’s kind of hard to find and purchase turkey during the rest of the year, so we have to seize the opportunity and eat all the turkey we can on christmas day. What about those tiny santa claus shaped cookies?? I don’t even like most of them but they are so cute I just eat the anyways.
4. There is nothing better than those very cheesy and predictable christmas Movies
Now we’re talking. From classics like It’s a Wonderful Life to The Polar Express, christmas movies make every christmas experience so much better. And you doesn't even need to buy the movies since a bunch of TV channels just reprise them. Christmas movies like Home Alone and How the Grinch Stole Christmas should be watched by every human being on earth so they can understand the references on Facebook - otherwise they will never get memes. In addition, you can pretty much classify every movie that has snow in it a christmas movie. So according to my classification eligibility, Harry Potter and Narnia can totally be Christmas movies, which just makes the list of holidaymovies even better.
5. Christmas Songs
According to many of my American friends, you are only allowed to start listening to christmas songs after Thanksgivingis over. However, since Thanksgiving doesn't exist in Brazil (Black Friday exists tho, but that’s another story!) I consider myself technically allowed to listen to christmas music all year - and in two languages. My favorite is “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” and “Baby it’s Cold outside”… no wait it actually is “Let it Snow”…. or maybe “All I Want for Christmas is You”…. on never mind, it’s definitely “Jingle Bell Rock…. who am I kidding, it’s “Holy Night”…..enough!!! I can’t choose!!!
6. Michael Buble is back (and so is Mariah Carrey)
The Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus of the music world, Michael and Mariah, are transformed once again in popular gods during the month of December. Their songs play at every possible public space, and when you are in a private location, their songs inhabitant your mind and you simply can’t let them go, so you involuntarily start mumbling the song - and then suddenly everyone is singing it.
7. Christmas Spirit
Regardless of all bad things that happened over the year (especially in 2016!! What a year!!) all the christmas spirit of charity and love makes one see that there’s still good in this world.
