It seems that a lot of people in my generation are making jokes about not wanting to “adult” these days. Millennials live fast-paced lives, often trying to do everything at once and trying to accomplish everything that society is pushing us to do: go to college (but also have a job because if you don’t have one you’re a lazy freeloader), travel (but also save your money), etc. Time goes by so quickly we don’t have much time to adjust; one moment we are considered kids and the next we have responsibility upon responsibility thrust upon us. There’s so much pressure to do everything at once -- no wonder we constantly long to be kids again! While there’s plenty of great things about being an adult, sometimes it’s exhausting and boring. So grab your juice box (or bottle of wine) and unleash your inner child for a moment. Here is why growing up is so overrated!
1. You can’t just take naps whenever you want.
In kindergarten naps were a luxury that we took for granted. Why can’t I have a quick nap break at work? I might be a bit more productive if only I could sleep more. I dreaded nap time as a kid, and now all I want to do is sleep a little bit longer!
2. Some things are “just for kids.”
Excuse me? What do you mean I can’t order off the kid's menu? A 21-year-old can enjoy a grilled cheese as much as a 5-year-old. Let me live my life!
3. You have to be serious to be taken seriously.
I, for one, am a person who doesn’t take herself too seriously. I live my life by making jokes because I simply love to laugh. Life shouldn’t always be taken so seriously because it’s okay to have fun every once in a while.
4. Cartoons? Forget it.
People will ask you “aren’t you a little too old for cartoons?” No, I am not. Thank you for your concern though -- I need to be getting back to my Saturday morning cartoons.
5. Getting dressed up can get old.
Job interview? Dress up. Work? Dress up. Party? Dress up? What happened to the days of running around in whatever you wanted? After college, it’s socially unacceptable to go places in pajamas. After a day of work, all I can think about is how badly I want to be in comfy clothes.
Adulthood is overrated and it’s okay to say it.
