5 Reasons ECU is Right for You

"I long, as does every human being, to be at home wherever I find myself." -Maya Angelou

There is simply no denying that ECU is one of a kind. Some not very familiar with the University may just refer to ECU as a college, but us ECU students know it is much more than that… it is our home.

Here are 5 reasons why I think ECU is the greatest place to go to school:

1) The warm welcome of the South.

One reason ECU is right for you is because the University really has a warm southern welcome. When I came to ECU my Freshman year from out of state, I didn't know a soul. The people at East Carolina are very hospitable, friendly, and were able to make me feel right at home. The people aren't the only thing warm about ECU, East Carolina is also a great choice because of the weather. Greenville certainly has all four seasons, but the southern location makes the fall and winter a little more bearable.

2) The spirit of Pirate Nation.

When it comes to school spirit, ECU has it down pat. If you are looking for a school that is spirited and knows how to have a good time, this is the right place for you. From football, to basketball, and baseball you are guaranteed to see a sea of purple and gold in the stadiums. At all sporting events, tailgates, and even walking around campus, the students, alumni and faculty always look happy to be a part of Pirate Nation.

3) ECU has something for everyone.

If you are looking to get involved, you have come to the right place. East Carolina has countless opportunities for students to get involved in the school outsides of academics. ECU has so many great clubs that meet on campus, and if for some reason you can't find one that you like, you can start your own. From greek life, community service, campus ministry, intramural sports, writing for the newspaper, to on campus jobs, there really is something for everyone to take advantage of here at ECU.

4) Greenville is a college town.

I know it is kind of cliche to say that Greenville is a college town, however everything in Greenville really does revolve around ECU. Many of the local businesses downtown and around Greenville support the University with pirate flags and window displays. The restaurants around Greenville are geared towards college students and have reasonably priced options and good students discounts. If you are ever in need of donations for a fundraiser or charity event, stores in the area are very open to giving to students working for a cause.

5) We know how to have a good time.

The students at East Carolina really do know how to have a good time. Not just in the literal sense, I mean of course we love to party. ECU students also have a great time hosting events and fundraisers that benefit others. Barbecues and baked ziti dinners for the Autism Speaks Foundation and waffle dinners for the Make-A-Wish Foundation are just a few examples of events that are happening all the time at East Carolina University. Another way ECU students have a good time is through participation in events like Homecoming and Greek week. With friendly competitions and rivalries, those events bring the student body together, and fun and participation is had by all.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
