You come into college with a major you're excited about, or, maybe you just picked a major because it makes a lot of money. You might have even chosen a random one because the application said you had to. According to Virginia Tech admissions, students change their major an average of three times over the course of their college career!

While changing your major is not uncommon, it is still a very stressful process.

1. "Why am I even in this program?"

Maybe your goals changed, or your interests changed, or you never liked these classes in the first place. This realization sometimes comes as a shock, or maybe you've known it all along. Either way, if you have this thought every time you go to class, you should probably consider changing your major. This is most likely the point in time where you rethink your entire life, wondering where you went wrong. Don't freak out! This is totally normal.

2. "What other programs interest me?"

You probably have other interests and hobbies outside of what classes you're currently taking. See if there's a major for it! Think outside the box here. For example, if you love writing but don't want to be an English major, try Communications! Talk to your friends in other majors and see what they like about the programs.

3. "Is this even feasible?"

Are you going to be able to graduate on time? Or, is it worth it for you to stay behind for a few more semesters in order to take classes you enjoy? A good discussion with your advisor and parents are in order during this stage.

4. "Am I sure about this?"

Once you've talked to all the right people, it's decision time. Is this something you're going to do or not? While you should take your time and not rush into things, generally, the sooner you make up your mind, the better. There are probably a ton of prerequisites that you'll have to take care of. Your new major may require you to officially be on their records before you can sign up for their classes. There may be a new language requirement or general studies requirement you don't know about. Again, this is something you'd want to speak with an advisor about.

5. "Where do I sign the paperwork?"

Congratulations! You've decided to officially change your major and dive head-first into new waters. Make sure to take care of all your paperwork on time so that your records will be correct. Good luck with your new major! I'm sure you're going to love it.
