When you first get to campus, you are bombarded with lists of possible activities and clubs to join. At the activity fair, you sign up for just about every club whether you have interest in them or not. Then you get emails from about 15 clubs everyday for the rest of your college career because no one knows how to work ListServ. But once classes start, it’s hard to decide which clubs to keep, which ones to drop, and which ones to pursue a leadership role in. Here are some questions to ask yourself if you are debating which extracurriculars will maximize your college experience.
Why do I want join this club?
This seems really simple but it is important to ask. Make sure you actually have interest in your activities otherwise you won’t enjoy them. If you aren’t excited during the interest meeting, your time is probably better spent somewhere else.
Do I enjoy going to this activity?
A club may sound really exciting at first, but then turn out to be different from what you thought. Don’t feel like you have to stick with it and find something else that has what you were looking for.
Am I actually interested in this activity, or do I think it will look good on my résumé?
It’s great to be involved in positions and activities that you can put on your résumé, but it is equally as important to participate in clubs just for fun.
Do I want to continue this activity outside of college?
Cubs and activities don’t have to end when you graduate. Join a club or two that you can continue outside of school.
Am I signing up because I have always done this activity, or could I sign up for something new in its place?
Pursue your interests and passions, but don’t say no to things just because you haven’t tried them. There are so many unique clubs to join!
College is filled with so many opportunities, which can make it hard to decide which ones to take. Help make your choice easier by asking yourself these questions next time you are choosing what to get involved in on campus.
