Living in Oregon, it’s easy to feel a sense of pride about our state. Within a few hours, we can go to the beach, ski in the mountains, visit the desert or hike through a beautiful forest. We also have one of the best cities on Earth (in my opinion): Portland. It’s impossible not to fall in love with Portland, but there are a few experiences that you need to have.
1. Luc Lac.
I have to put this as number one because it is my favorite restaurant of all time. There is no place that I know of that is more Portland or more tasty. Luc Lac is Vietnamese food and has a variety of Pho’s, noodles and rice dishes. It also has a full bar and is open late. There is nothing more satisfying than going to Luc Lac at two in the morning and ordering a chicken rice plate with crispy rolls… you can’t beat it.
2. Pittock Mansion.
This is by far my favorite place in the city. During the day, you can tour the mansion and check out the creepy rooms. Afterward, the view right outside is absolutely breathtaking. However, a hidden Portland secret is going to Pittock Mansion at night. The gates may lock at nine, but it’s easy to park in the neighborhood and walk up to the view. Gazing at the city lights and stars is a fantastic feeling, and I would highly recommend it.
3. Blue Star.
Often when people think of Portland, their mind immediately goes to Voodoo donuts. Here’s the truth about voodoo — they are regular donuts. The line is always way too long and the donuts are always a little stale. However, a lesser known but much better quality place is Blue Star donuts. I would recommend going early, since they often run out as the day goes on, but some of the best donuts you’ll ever have are from here.
4. Saturday Market.
Located near the Waterfront, the Saturday market is every Sunday and Saturday. It’s huge, stretching out over several blocks and often has live music and great food. It is also a great place to people watch, as you are guaranteed to see characters from all corners of Portland. Be prepared to see some utensil art and lots of henna artists. It’s an experience that you won’t forget.
5. Hawthorne.
While it may be a little less known than 23rd street, Hawthorne is larger and often more bustling. It has thrift stores on every block, as well as many delicious food options. I would highly recommend Por Que No or Waffle Window. However, if you are feeling like a smoothie, Kure is the place to go. From the people you see to the thrift shops you’ll hunt through, going to Hawthorne is an adventure in itself.
I’ve lived in Portland for seven years and I still haven’t discovered all of its secrets. The best thing about this city is it’s variety of things to do. I am never bored here. My advice when traveling to Portland is to go to all of these places, and then discover more. Portland welcomes those with a sense of adventure, so throw on a flannel and some Birkenstocks and get exploring.
