Besides shaking your hips like Shakira and drinking delicious coffee in Barranquilla, Colombia, it is also an incredibly gourmet place. There are so many options of all different food types. From vegetarian to sushi and pizza to Belgian waffles, the opportunities are endless.

1. Juan Valdez Café

This is an absolute must. You cannot mis out and I promise you will not go just once! You will be so addicted to the smell of sweet coffee and pastries that you will end up sitting there for an hour each day. A must try is the "Nevados," what we would call Frappuchino. The arequipe and mochachip ones are so good you won't be able to put down the cup.

2. La Gofréria

This cute little hidden restaurant is relatively new, however it houses some delicious gourmet Belgian waffles. You have the option of something salty or something sweet. The sandwiches are made of waffles with a bread base and the sweet waffles are based on the house recipe and a dash of cinnamon. The sweet concoctions can be made to your liking but some of the famous ones have chocolate covered strawberries, arequipe and even nutella!

3. Donde esta Javier?

Hot dogs are another must. Here a hot dog is a delicacy; nothing like American hot dogs. Hot dogs have a special sauce and crushed chips on top. There are so many options however, from simple to Hawaiian and even chicken and mushrooms. Wherever you purchase a hot dog during your visit is not that relevant, just make sure you get one before mounting the plane and taking off.

4. Heladeria Americana

This little place just sells ice cream and it is what they are most famous for. It is the oldest and most famous ice cream place in Barranquilla. Their most famous delicacy is called the "Frozomalt." This contains ice cream and a fruit concoction mixed in. I would love to share more, but the recipe is one of the best kept secrets here since 1936.

5. La Diva

Pizza and pasta are also a crowd favorite here and in most places. You will be reminded of traditional Italian pizza with its thin, crispy crust. The restaurant's decor is also breathtaking with bottles hanging from the ceiling, vines coming out of the walls and vegetables everywhere. The pizza is definitely a must, but it will be huge so brace yourself for the calories to come.
