5 Places to Donate Hair and What You Need to Know About Donating

I’ve always had long hair, and have grown it out to donate since I was a little girl. Just last week, I chopped off over 12 inches of hair to donate – the fifth time I’ve done so. I’ve learned quite a bit about hair donation and foundations which support individuals with hair loss over the years. Here’s what you need to know before donating.

1. Why donate?

Cutting off so much hair and just throwing it away can be wasteful, especially to those with hair loss. Donating provides wigs to people suffering from events and illnesses that cause hair loss – Alopecia, Trichotillomania, chemotherapy, radiation, burns, and others. This hair loss can result in a loss of self-confidence and self-esteem, which is just an added stress when dealing with health-related problems. Donating hair when you get a lengthier haircut is a great way to put the excess to use and help others!

2. Who can donate?

Anyone can donate! Your hair type or color does not matter for this process; all types are welcome. However, you’ll have to be careful about hair that has been dyed or bleached – some organizations do not accept treated hair.

3. How long does it have to be?

This varies by place. Generally, places will ask for hair that is at least 8-12 inches long, but this is not the rule. Make sure you look into where you’d like to donate and see their stipulations on hair length!

4. Who can cut it?

Anyone! You can either get your hair cut by a professional and ask that they ponytail it before they cut it and take it home to send yourself, or some locations will send the hair for you. Just remember to ask if they do, and where they send it!

5. Where to send it?

There’s quite a number of places that create wigs for people with hair loss. Take a look at the following list and see what foundation works best for you!

A Child’s Choice Foundation

A Child’s Choice Foundation’s Angel Hair for Kids program provides wigs and hair loss solutions to children in low-income families in Canada. Each recipient is given a personal appointment at a salon (or, the professional at the salon will visit the recipient) and specially fitted with a wig and given all necessary tools to take care of it.

Hair length: minimum 12 inches
Hair stipulations: Must be in a ponytail or braid and fully dry
Can hair be colored?: No treated, colored, bleached, dyed, or permed hair can be donated
Does the recipient have to pay?: No, wigs are donated

Sidenote: You will notice that I did not include Locks of Love on this list. Locks of Love has been subject to quite the controversy in the nonprofit world – not only do they charge their recipients (who already have medical bills to worry about), but they have millions of dollars’ worth of unused hair which could be made into wigs but is unaccounted for. Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
