Education is a very demanding field, even if some people do not want to admit that. Whether we are teaching kindergartners or seniors we all hold the same job, to teach the young. We are the ones that are literally going to be teaching the future of the world.
We are the ones that teach the kids right from wrong. They learn their attitude towards life through the different stories that we read to them. As a whole, education is a tricky task to handle, that is why education majors are a little different than others.
1. You have to be the life of the "party"
Unlike the high school teacher from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" a teacher can not be boring. With just standing up at the board talking, you will manage to make all your students fall asleep, just like he did. You have to be jumping around the classroom making the students interested in learning.
2. You have to be willing to get down and dirty
With decorations being so expensive, sometimes you have to get a little gluey and make your own. You have to pull our the crayons and markers from your kid's drawers and get to work. What is as fun as coloring for hours straight? Plus you might even come up with a new way to teach your students how to use scissors properly.
3. You have to be willing to go outside your comfort zone
Whether you put on a costume or you read a new book to the class, taking risks is what is fun about education. By planning unusual lesson plans that might work or not, this is how your students learn the most. If you are able to step out of your comfort, it will allow your students to learn other ways as well.
4. You have to know how to respect authority
Your principal is going to be your best friend and worst enemy. He or she is going to be the one that carries the best and the worst news that you want to hear. The hard job is to be able to respect his or her authority whatever is happening. Sometimes it is tricky, but if you are a true teacher, you will be able to do it.
5. You just have to be different than those with "adult" jobs
From planning lessons to decorating your classroom, you have to be an individual. No two students learn alike, which means it is the teachers job to expand learning for every student. By expressing your true self (which is weird, I do not know a education major who is not) your students will feel comfortable to do the same thing. Which makes you the best teacher possible.
Being an education major might not be a six year program, but it is making a decision that you will have to work hard at for the rest of your life. We might be a little different than those who chose business, but different is a good thing. I mean we are the ones that are going to teach the future doctors and maybe even the future president.
