One Tree Hill might just be a series on Netflix now. But to me, it's a show that has taught me so much.
1. "People want to hear songs with words they're afraid to say."
We tend to always turn to music when we're feeling down. We're looking for the words that describe exactly how we're feeling. Once you find that song, you feel this new feeling, like you're not alone. Well, the truth is, you're not alone. Whether it's a breakup, a death, or even something happy, someone else has already gone through it. Take a deep breath and enjoy the music, because everything is going to be okay. You're not alone.
2. "And when you find yourself in the darkness and despair, remember it's only in the black of night you see the stars."
While going through the rough times in your life you might feel as if there isn't a light at the end of the tunnel. You think you're going to feel this pain forever. No matter what the situation is — whether you fail a test, break up with your boyfriend/girlfriend, or lose a friend — you feel as if your life is coming to an end. But just when you think you'll never see that light, something amazing and fantastic happens to you and there it is, that light you never thought you'd see again.
3. "Somebody told me that this is the place where everything's better and everything's safe."
Moving away from home was probably the hardest thing I've ever done. Before I left, I told myself I wanted to go so far away from this small town. But when it came down to deciding where I wanted to go to school, I chose somewhere that was only a little over an hour away. At first, that hour felt like forever. I thought I would never be able to come home again. I thought when I would go back home things would be different. But it's not. It's my safe place. It's true when they say "home is where the heart is," because when you're upset at 3 a.m. on a weekend and you need your mom, just know she will be a phone call away, and better yet, just an hour away. And of course, she'll stay up waiting for you to get home. Because after all, home is your safe place.
4. "People are all going to label you. But it's how you overcome those labels. That's what matters."
Making a mistake in high school feels like the end of the world. Walking down the halls, getting called names, getting that certain label. It's not fun. Going out in public and knowing everyone knows your business because we live in such a small town and news travels fast. But after a year, I have finally learned that I don't have a label, and my mistakes don't define who I am as a person. I let go of my label. I didn't make that mistake again. I learned several lessons. But the most important one was that that small mistake doesn't have to follow me any longer.
5. "It's the oldest story in the world. One day you're 17 and planning for someday, and then quietly, without you ever really noticing, someday is today, and that someday is yesterday and this is your life."
I never thought that college would come. I never thought that high school graduation would come. We never think anything is going to come. We just always wish for the weekends when it's Monday, for summer break when it's snowing out, for Christmas break when school starts, and spring break right after Christmas break ends. We never realize how much time is actually passing. Sometimes it's nice to slow down and take a second to think about everything you've accomplished in your life. Enjoy everything that is happening in the moment instead of always wishing for the future.
