If you're an English Major, then you share my love for the english language. It's an escape from the real world and an outlet for our creativity. Despite the joy and bliss we receive from reading and writing, we face many struggles. I now present you with 5 of the many struggles we wrestle with on a day-to-day basis.
1. Reading, reading, and more reading
You’re an English Major. Reading is part of what you signed up for, but sometimes its extremely daunting when you step back and look at all of the books, poems, stories, essays, and other forms of literature that you’ll have to get through in such a short period of time. In the end, it will be worth it, so stick to it!
2. Being the friendly neighborhood writing guru
Once others find out you’re an English major, you’re the one they go to for writing help. It’s flattering and fun, but when you’re drowning in papers of your own, correcting someone else’s work is the last thing you want to do.
3. Having more books than you can handle
If you’re like me, then you hoard books. Books are to me as shoes are to my best friend. I can never have enough. Saying this, I have limited space to keep them, so they end up piling up into a beautiful mess of words and pages. It may be a hassle, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
4. Dealing with the phrase, “Oh, so you want to be a teacher?”
Teaching is a wonderful profession, but just because I major in English doesn’t mean I automatically want to teach. My possibilities are endless, and just like everyone else, I can be whatever I want if I work hard and set my mind to it.
5. Facing the haters
Not everyone understands why we chose English. To them it may be a boring, pointless subject not worth any time at all. To us it’s everything. People will continue to doubt us and misunderstand us no matter what we say. We just have to keep living our dreams to the best of our ability and remember what drew us to this amazing subject in the first place.
