5 New Artists To Check Out Based On Who You Already Like

Do you ever feel like you’re constantly playing the same few songs over and over again until you end up hating them? Are you looking for some new music, but not ready to give up your old tastes? If you answered yes to both of those questions, then this is the article for you. I’ve got you covered with some music suggestions based on the artists you already like.

If you like Hozier, then you’ll love…

Father John Misty

You’re probably thinking, “Wait, he’s just another dude with long hair and a beard." And yes, while those are both true facts, looks aren’t everything. His songs are all written as ballads about love, and when accompanied by his haunting vocals you are sure to feel some kind of way. Take a listen to an acoustic version of “I Love You, Honeybear” from his newest album released in 2015 also titled "I love You Honeybear."

If you like The 1975, then you’ll love…

The Japanese House

Born and raised in Buckinghamshire, 20 year old Amber Bain, aka The Japanese House, is about to be the next best thing in the world of music. The Japanese House is actually opening for The 1975’s 2016 tour, which makes them even better. Despite having already released their first EP, "Pools To Bathe In," and now their second EP, "Clean," in November of 2015, Amber has only recently begun to perform her material live. If you know what’s good for you, listen to “Cool Blue” from their EP "Clean."

If you like BANKS, then you’ll love…

Wet

This electronic indie trio from Brooklyn creates music that aligns with the melodic, soulful style of BANKS. Kelly Zutrau is Wet’s lead vocalist and is accompanied by her close friends, Joe Valle and Marty Sulkow, to embody a minimalist, '90s R&B type sound. They released their self-titled debut EP last October and just dropped their first album, "Don’t You" in the beginning of this year. Check out “Don’t Wanna Be Your Girl” from their new album "Don’t You."

If you like the Alabama Shakes, then you’ll love…

Leon Bridges

Singer, songwriter and guitarist Leon Bridges has the retro, R&B soulful sound that fits in the same category as the Alabama Shakes bluesy, southern rock. After signing to Columbia records, Bridges started releasing music in 2015. His first album titled "Coming Home" reflects his classic style perfectly, transporting you back to the '60s. A new singer with an old sound? Sign me up. Check out his song “Better Man,” which was released as a single in 2015.

If you like Drake, then you’ll love…

Bryson Tiller

Contemporary R&B singer songwriter Bryson Tiller is the perfect mix of soul and rap that we’ve all been looking for. After gaining approval from Drake who offered to sign him to his sound label OVO, Tiller decided to sign to RCA instead, which houses Miguel and Tinashe. His first album "TRAPSOUL" was released in October of 2015, featuring his hit single “Don’t.” Take a listen to the song “Exchange,” but be prepared to become obsessed with him.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
