In my opinion, Malayalam cinema has always been great. I grew up watching them and I loved them. Compared to the other film industries in India, this is one of the smallest. Despite that, they have produced so many iconic films that have won numerous prestigious awards. The actors and actresses have been known for their incredible talent. Other industries remake multiple films into their own language (although most of the time the don't do the original justice). In the recent years, this fine industry has been getting more recognition. While they are still beyond underrated to this day, it is nice to see that the attention has increased as well as the fan base. Never watched a Malayalam movie? Don't know where to start? Look no further! Here are five (there are sooo many more out there but we'll start small for now) must watch Malayalam films.
1. "Iyobinte Pusthakam"
This is one of my all time favorite films. The casting is brilliant and the background score is simply excellent. This historical fiction film is an entertainer and surely not to be missed.
2. "Premam"
This coming of age film about a guy named George David will have you laughing and crying. This story of finding love is so refreshing and different. A unique perspective that won't disappoint.
3. "Bangalore Days"
This heartwarming film will make you glad that you watched it! Anjali Menon and her incredible talents capture this film in the most beautiful way possible. The close bond between three cousins shows how important family is. Watching them and their adventures as they all end up in Bangalore is full of twists and turns that leave you wanting more.
4. "Drishyam"

5. Ohm Shanthi Oshaana
This is another coming of age film about a young girl named Pooja. This insanely cute movie is in the perspective of the female lead which is not so common to see ad very refreshing as well. Nazriya gives an excellent performance and Nivin looks incredibly dashing as well. This feel good film will make you remember that first big crush you had and will bring back all those feelings you had then.
