1. "What's Eating Gilbert Grape"
I'm an absolute 1990s film junkie, so take note when I say that this movie is my favorite from that decade. Between small-town simplicity, young Johnny Depp's charming looks, and an outstanding performance by Leonardo DiCaprio, "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" provides an authentic, character-driven viewing experience. The Oscars truly failed to do DiCaprio justice with this film.
2. "Little Miss Sunshine"
This movie captured my attention and held onto it for the entire duration of the film. It's quirky, it's witty, and it's heartfelt. Steve Carell and Abigail Breslin both deliver excellent performances (I always get a kick out of baby-faced Breslin circa 2006).
3. "Heathers"
Since watching this film, I've converted to Team Christian Slater and Winona Ryder instead of Team Johnny Depp and Ryder (sorry Johnny). "Heathers" is cool, rebellious, and grungy. Between raunchy quotes and unexpectedly dark plot twists, this movie constitutes one of Netflix's most underrated gems.
4. "High Fidelity"
"High Fidelity" seems like it was specially made for people enduring a fresh breakup. This film combines equal qualities of drama, comedy, and romance, successfully avoiding any rom-com cliches. Throw in some great music references and outstanding performances by John Cusack and Jack Black, and you've got yourself a cult classic.
5. "Fargo"
"Fargo" is funny, raw, explicit—and one of my favorite movies of all time. Overlapping plots and character relationships kept me constantly engaged and wondering how the overall storyline would intersect. Clearly the Coen Brothers did something right in this film—it's since spawned a successful TV series of the same name.
