Coming out of high school, I felt like I learned a lot in four years. But after one semester at college, I've realized that I only learned the same things over and over. I have learned so much more in one semester of college than four years of high school. I have taken classes that expanded my mind and taught me very interesting things. I also have learned a lot about myself as a person by having to be away from home and be responsible for myself. After one semester of college, here are five lessons I learned that I didn't learn in four years of high school.

1. Time Management

Although classes and schedules are more relaxed in college, the work is more intense. You can't procrastinate papers and studying until the night before like in high school. Five classes may not seem like a lot, but each has a heavy workload, and college teaches you to manage school, work, and your social life. You learn to prioritize and motivate yourself.

2. To Cherish My Family And My Time With Them

I went to college two hours away from home, and although that isn't that far, it has been hard for me. Now I really enjoy and cherish the time I spend with my family even more. College will make you closer with your family.

3. How To Actually Study

I'll admit it, I never once studied for a test in high school (sorry, mom). High school tests weren't too difficult and you could breeze by without studying. But if you don't study in college, you will fail. I started to study at least a week before an exam and I learned what studying techniques worked for me. Studying drastically helps your grades.

4. How To Be Independent

You now live on your own. You can eat what you want, sleep when you want, and not go to class when you want. But just because you can lay in your PJs and watch Netflix all day, that doesn't mean you should. College teaches you how to be responsible for yourself without your parents' help.

5. To Get Involved

I never joined clubs in high school. All you hear about is being involved in college and joining clubs. But it's true; there are clubs for everything and you're bound to find one that fits you. Joining clubs is a great way to network, meet friends, and have a good time with people like you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
