Over the years, my mother has taught me many lessons that I have carried with me throughout my life. In fact, the list is so long that I had to shorten it to my favorite five. Thanks, Mom, for a lifetime of wisdom...
1. Run More Eat Less
These four words have followed me like a dark cloud ever since I realized how much I LOVE food. Mom, with your developed palate and food critic taste in restaurants you have taught me how to not only eat to live but live to eat! Unfortunately, there have been times when I lost all self control. But thanks to all of the times you told me "eat slower" and "the more you run the more you can eat" I have been able to properly monitor my eating habits and keep the notorious college weight off while still being able to enjoy the foods we love.
2. Kill em' with Kindness
Middle school and high school years are very dramatic times in a girl's life. You learn what it's like to lose a friend or multiple friends, lose a boyfriend, and overall experience not-so-great times with people who often need a kick in the face. But, through it all, Mom, you have taught me to not let these things phase me and that being kind to those who can be mean is the best revenge of all.
3. Don't Be So Critical of Yourself
Growing up in a vain society obsessed with appearance and materials is hard on anyone, let's face it. Looking in the mirror or a recent photo, I can always find a flaw or minor imperfection in my face or body that to me, seems like the end of the world. "Don't insult my baby" you would always tell me. Mom, I'm sorry for being unhappy with my appearance from time to time. It's not only insulting myself but insulting you as well. Thank you for not only teaching me that being my biggest critic allows me to find flaws, but for also reminding me that no one is perfect and to always love myself.
4. You're Never Fully Dressed Without...Makeup
Although you taught me to love myself regardless of what was looking back at me in the mirror, you always stressed the importance of lip gloss and a little blush. "You never know, today could be the day you meet your future boss or future husband. " You always made sure I was well dressed and groomed to perfection because first impressions are everything. Thank you for the constant reminder to always touch up before leaving the house...you're right, it does make the day a lot better.
5. Don't Settle
My favorite lesson of all is this one: don't settle. "The world is your oyster" you'd say and you are so right. Whether it was with the relationships I formed, the jobs I took, or even the grade I might have received, you always taught me that I deserved the best. Thank you for reminding me to never give up and that I can do anything I set my mind to.
Looking at my life today, coming so far yet having so much further to go, I see all of the amazing lessons you've taught me hard at work. You have shown and constantly remind me of my worth and how to love and appreciate myself. Thank you, Mom, for making me who I am today.
