Time capsules are an underrated idea (in my opinion). You get to put items that you feel represent who you are at that present time, bury it, and rediscover it some time in the future. I think it's an awesome way to look back on who you were as a person and maybe the amount of growth that was made. I want to create my own time capsule to discover in the future. Here are five items that I would include in my own time capsule:
1. Excerpts from my college papers
I want to include bits and pieces of my college papers into my time capsule because I am a writer and I write about things that are important to me (such as intersectional feminism and what that looks like across races, cultures, and sexualities).
2. Photographs
I would include photographs because I think that it will be important to have tangible memories so that I can look back on them and remember what I was doing, who I was with (especially those of my family and friends), and what life was like at that time.
3. A video message
I think that having a video message would be important to me because I would want to hear what my thoughts were like at the time and hopefully have checked off any goals that I may have set for myself at the time.
4. One of my favorite pens to write with
As a writer, of course I have a favorite type of pen. I've repurchased these pens for years and honestly they are the best I've ever had because they write so well (in my opinion). These pens are the Paper Mate Ink joy black ink pens (thank me later).
5. My favorite book
Honestly I think this changes on a day-to-day basis, but I think that my favorite book (of all time) would have to be "This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color" (1981). I would include this book because it has helped me during times of questioning who I am as a woman of color, my sexuality, and why writing is so important to me and for the world. It is a book that has and will continue to inspire me to live my truth in every way possible.
I hope that by listing what I would include in my own time capsule, that it inspires you to create your own. I think it's a great way to see any growth, look back on memories made, see any change in the person I've become and my values. Would you ever make a time capsule? Why (this is unique to everyone)?
