Bill Murray is one of America’s most beloved actors. From "Ghostbusters" to "Groundhog Day" to "Lost in Translation," Murray has captivated the hearts of audiences for generations through his mix of comedic and dramatic performances. But just as famous are the legendary tales of Murray’s offscreen interactions with fans, who are often ecstatic to rub elbows with the comedy icon. Here are some of Bill Murray’s greatest exploits.
1. In 2013, a young woman was sitting in Central Park eating her lunch. She was shocked and upset when a stranger came up behind her and took two of her fries, until she turned around to see Bill Murray standing behind her. He leaned down and whispered, “No one will ever believe you.” Then he whispered, “Can I have a few more fries?” He proceeded to eat the rest of her fries, half her Big Mac and three bites of her apple pie before he begged her to walk him to the nearest McDonald’s and buy him seven Happy Meals. She never saw him again.
2. In 2008, a Louisiana couple got married. At their wedding reception, a familiar figure was seen schmoozing with guests, dancing with the bride’s family, and carefully sneaking food into a series of attaché briefcases until the wee hours of the morning. At the end of the night, the couple walked up to the guest and asked if he was the famous actor they thought he was. He responded, “Yes, it me, the Garfield man Bill Murray. And if you have any leftover food, I will gladly take it from your possession.” Then he took two large handfuls of cake and a tray of fried shrimp and walked outside into a lake.
3. In 2010, a group of friends was playing kickball at their local park. To their surprise, Murray showed up out of nowhere. “Hello, it is I! Bill Murray, the Garfield prince,” said the Academy Award-nominated actor. “I would be very excited to kick the ball for up to 30 minutes, and then I will partake in your glorious kickball feast.” When the men told him that they didn’t have any food and had already eaten lunch before the game, Murray cursed out everyone in attendance, kicked their ball over a nearby fence, and stormed away in a huff.
4. In 2009, several colleagues went out for karaoke in New York. Around 1 a.m., Murray showed up and performed this improvised song for the group:
“I am Bill Murray, the man who is Garfield
And Garfield I always will be
So give me the food you have on your person
I’ll eat in the corner, then leave”
5. Murray famously doesn’t have an agent. However, this is not a professional choice on Murray’s part: Every agent refuses to work with him after he gained a reputation for cleaning out agents’ fridges and sneaking out.
