Making the decision to transfer is tough whether you’re in elementary, high school, or college. When transferring to a new college or university it is important to try your best to not be overwhelmed.
There are hundreds of reasons for changing your school and you should remember you do not have to explain your reasoning to anyone! No matter the reason you will be the “new kid” all over again. Here are some pointers from my personal experience to make things a little easier within the transitioning period.
1. Be open and attend events designed for students like you!
Usually when transferring the school holds a transfer student orientation. Although this may feel like a waste of time since you have already done so at another school, these events are usually vital and are sometimes very enjoyable.
It’s also important to remember that no matter how much research you did on your new school you won’t know everything right away, and you aren’t expected to. Join in on the activities held during the event and be open to learning new information and meeting new friends in the process.
2. Learn the culture and your surroundings.
Every school has their own way of doing things, and by being conscious of the campus’ vibe you will be able to ease into things a bit easier. By no means does this mean you need to change yourself to fit in. Instead, by learning about what other students do for fun, clubs, and other activities you can choose how you want to fit in.
3. Dive in head first.
Getting involved is also a great way of getting to know other students and professors outside of the classroom. I cannot stress this one enough. In college you may or may not already know that you have a ton of time in between and after classes. I highly recommend joining at least one club or other organization.
You can binge your favorite Netflix shows later with the new friends you make within group outings and other club activities. Be involved and don’t be afraid to give your opinion. Do what you like and feel is right and everything else will come easy.
4. Go to office hours.
As a transfer student you will most likely be diving into your major courses. While this may sound scary these are usually the classes that matter to you and others who have your same interests, instead of over-populated freshman 101’s. Depending on your school’s size, you will have some professors multiple times.
Be sure to introduce yourself and get to know them, they don’t bite I promise! They are honestly some of your biggest supporters and usually, if they see you working hard they’ll help you out more. Getting to know them early will give you a great advantage in the class, especially when things get tough.
5. Most importantly relax and have fun.
College is all about new experiences. Don’t let the stress of being a transfer student in a new environment freak you out too much.
Go out and have fun. Plan on doing something that first week with the friends you made online or at orientation. Form a study group with people from your major. Go to hang out spots on campus and talk to new people. The possibilities are endless when it comes to college and you have the freedom to make the experience your own. So go out and enjoy yourself and remember to be yourself.
