When the holiday season rolls around, everyone seems to catch Christmas fever. Christmas movies play daily between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve, decorations are hung immediately following Halloween and holiday cheer is so thick in the air you can almost taste it. The holiday craze comes earlier and earlier each year, but not everybody is totally sold on the Christmas spirit, and they know these five things to be true.
1. Christmas season begins before Thanksgiving has even started.
It comes earlier and earlier every year. Stores begin their Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving, dubbing that Thursday "Gray Thursday." When the sales start earlier, retail workers are unable to spend Thanksgiving with their families and instead must spend it with thousands of shoppers hunting for good deals. As someone not enthused with the holidays, you have to ask, "What is the point?" Why not just enjoy some good food and wait until Thanksgiving is over to do your shopping?
2. Christmas carols are basically torture.
Why does there need to be a radio station that plays Christmas carols 24/7 from November to January? Traditional carols are annoying to listen to, and even more annoying when you're forced to sing along. Christmas music just isn't as entertaining as regular music, nor is it as good. (Except for Michael Bublé's Christmas album. That's the only acceptable form of Christmas music.)
3. Christmas sweaters.
Need I say more?
4. Snow is more of a hassle than it is beautiful.
While the holiday lovers see snow as a beautiful sign that Christmas is coming, it's more of a problem for the more rational of us. Driving in the snow is just an impossible feat, and don't even get me started on the cold temperatures. Walking to class through the wind and snow simply is not very high on my priorities.
5. Receiving presents just doesn't appeal to you.
Christmas has become one of the most materialistic holidays of the year. Children want bigger and more expensive toys and electronics, and parents are eager to please them. Don't get me wrong, giving presents to loved ones makes me feel a little less selfish, but receiving them? I just feel awkward.
All in all, while the holiday season is a time to be together with family and friends, not all of us are sold on the strings attached. I know I'd much rather just curl up with a fuzzy blanket, a cup of hot chocolate, and eat some good food this holiday season.
