The first TV show I ever really learned my real life lessons from was "Gilmore Girls." If you've ever seen this show, you know exactly what I am talking about. The mother-daughter relationship, the growing pains that Rory experienced as she got older and the love complications between being a teenager and an adult. They show these situations in a way that we can all relate to. The script isn't over the top or too "hollywood". It shows genuine life lessons that we all can take to heart and follow in certain ways. Here are 5 things "Gilmore Girls" taught me about life.
1. Relationships are complicated
While Lorelei and Rory had a great standing relationship, Emily and Lorelai, Mother and daughter, did not. Lorelai got pregnant at just sixteen years old and ran way. She closed Emily out and dropped all contact with her family. Her mother then refused to pay for Rory's schooling unless they stay involved in Lorelai and Rory's life. The relationship then became more complicated. Even Rory had complicated relationships with all three boys she dated throughout the series, which none of them were even remotely perfect, and Lorelai's relationship with Christopher, Rory's father, were all extremely complicated, yet real life situations that people encounter in day to day life.
2. Being close to your mom is OK
We have it in our heads that we can't be best friends with the people who raised us or know us better than we know ourselves. Rory and Lorelai have this amazing mother-daughter relationship that every mother and daughter should have. I mean, I consider my mom to be my best friend and I'm not ashamed of that. We should always have someone to lean on, like Rory and Lorelai do for each other. The amount of sarcasm and wit that these two spit at each other is phenomenal. There's no doubt that this isn't real life between mothers and daughters.
3. Real true love wears a flannel shirt and a backwards baseball cap
You may think it's crazy, but true love isn't a million dollars; it's the sarcastic, bagged guy behind the cafe counter, serving you coffee and telling you that you're absolutely insane. The thing is, he is so hopelessly in love with you, but he's too afraid to show it. There's no glamour, hollywood smile or big muscled guy. He was a simple, marriage material type of guy that you instantly fell in love with, while watching the show. I hate to break it to everyone, but the "perfect guy" in real life, isn't going to be a hollywood, blonde hair, blue eyed beauty. This is just another way Gilmore Girls succeeded at real life.
4. Sometimes you're more like your mother than you think you are
I constantly notice myself acting like my mother and sometimes it actually frightens me, but it's what I know and what I've learned while growing up. We all find ourselves acting like our parents, even in times where we refuse to be like them. We will always be somewhat like them. Rory and Lorelai were like two peas in a pod. But, they did have times where they couldn't see eye to eye because Lorelai raised Rory to follow her dreams, while Lorelai didn't follow hers. We are all like our parents and this is another way Gilmore Girls did a good job with the parent to child relationship.
5. Where you lead, I will follow
The theme song itself is a life lesson. Every time I hear the song, I think about my family and friends and how I would follow them when they needed me and I would always be there when they need me. The song isn't just about romantic love, but family love. It's about a mother and daughter relationship and how they will always be there for each other. Carole King's voice just brings it all to life. I know I would follow my family and friends where they lead and I know they would do the same for me. This is just another reason Gilmore Girls did a fabulous job creating real life.
