The city of San Francisco has so much to offer. For students who are always on the lookout for cheap activities, here are five my favorite places to go and all of them are free! Whether you are in the city for a day or looking for new places to explore, this list has something for everyone to enjoy; viewpoints, picnic locations, escapes, cool hang-out spots and photo-ops!
1. De Young Museum - Hamon Observation Towe
The most aesthetically pleasing viewpoint in SF. This viewpoint looks out into the backyard of the museum, Golden Gate Park’s Music Concourse. The de Young museum keeps this tower open to the public until the last hour before closing. With open views from every wall of the tower, there is a 360-degree view of the city. This is a great activity for a rainy day.
2. Dolores Park
This is located in the Mission district and easily accessible by public transportation. There is a bit of an uphill climb to the top but the view is breathtaking! I have found that this is the best place to picnic. Bring a blanket and good food and you are in for a great lunch. Dogs are allowed off-leash at this park so there are plenty of furry friends running around having as much fun as you are! (Popular tea house near by: Boba Guys, located 2 blocks east of Dolores Street!)
3. Hagiwara Japanese Tea Garden
The garden is the best way to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and settle into the tranquility of nature. The trees, statues and koi come together to create a calming ambiance. Be sure to check out the teahouse where you can sample authentic Japanese teas. There is an $8 charge to get into the garden; however, the receipt can be used to re-enter for the whole day! (Local tip: Monday, Wednesday and Friday admission is free if you get there before 10 a.m.)
4. Ocean beach
This beach is a perfect place to hang out, whether it be spring, summer or fall! Grab some friends, music and start a bonfire. Ocean beach is one of the quietest and cleanest beaches in San Francisco and is located just outside of the southwest end of Golden Gate Park. The beach is about 3.5 miles long. There is a limited public parking space so I would recommend taking the muni. (The muni lines that will take you directly to the beach are the 5, 31 and 18.)
5. Shopping in Union Square
If you are visiting San Francisco this is a must-do. Tourists and locals can both find a joy in sharing this area. My absolute favorite time to shop in Union Square is during the holidays. The city displays a huge tree and everything is festive. Not only do the stores appear to look nicer, but this whole part of the city becomes merrier!
Bonus. A gem just outside of Union Square, Maiden Lane
