How we thrive, even during a "couple's holiday."

Five Facts About Being Single On Valentine's Day (By Choice)

Every time Valentine's Day approaches, it can cause for an awkward situation for those who are single. People ask us stuff like, "what are your plans?" And if you don't really have any, they might even begin to pity you. While Valentine's Day is great for couples, many happen to be single on the holiday and a lot of them by choice. As a single-by-choice person myself, I would like to address some facts about us regarding the "lover's holiday."

1. We're not miserable.

When people think of all the single people on Valentine’s Day, they think we’re literally sprawled out on the living room couch with suddenly nothing to do all day, but wish we had somebody to share it with. Heck, most of us probably forgot it was Valentine’s Day because we were too busy living our lives like it was just any other day. However, single people, like me, are actually happy it's Valentine's Day because all the chocolate will be on sale, and we will have nobody to have to share it with.

2. We like having money.

When it gets closer to Valentine’s Day, so many people are talking about their plans of taking someone out to eat and buying them expensive things. Actually, in high school, I remember people who would literally date someone around Valentine’s Day, get the free stuff and then dump these poor fools and be back on their merry way. The whole thing makes my wallet cringe just thinking about it. While some of our coupled friends are out spending their life savings, we are still working on our Amazon Wish Lists.

3. We're already dating the grind.

One big reason a lot of us choose to be single is because relationships take a heck of a lot of time. It takes time to form one and time to maintain one. While it can be worth it for some, those of us in college especially are at the time where we are too busy working and doing school work and taking on all these responsibilities while trying to work on ourselves. While you can spend time on a relationship, some of us are too busy pursuing our passions, exploring our talents and just going out there and being the successful single people we are.

4. A lot of us aren't lonely.

Some people think that just because you’re single on Valentine’s Day, you’re automatically all alone as if everyone else in the world is going to be too busy for you because they're out with their dates. Not only do we have friends that we will be probably hanging out with that day, but some of us will still go out for the lover’s holiday and celebrate it as friends. Maybe it would be nice for us to go out and enjoy the night with someone we don’t have to buy dinner for.

5. We still hope you enjoy Valentine's Day.

Even though a lot of us singles will be out running the world during Valentine's Day, we still love all you coupled people and genuinely hope that its a special day for you. And who knows, maybe next year we'll be the ones with the reservations for two?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
