5 easy steps to making it in college

The step by step survival kit to making it (according to me)

Honestly some days I wish I was six years old where my mom would plan out my life: like coordinating my play dates instead getting thrown into endless group chats (thank you Apple for adding the remove button) or grocery shopping and not knowing whether to get the organic fruit over the regular because you’re on a college budget and wish your mom still filled up your fridge. Unfortunately, that’s growing up, and growing up is a bitch but it doesn’t have to be the whole time. I learned how to add certain tactics into this “phenomenon” of adulating and semi making it without starving and not balling to my mom once a week.

1) First off, get a damn job

Litrally make a resume and work. Do not get some BS job, find a job or internship that in the long run will benefit you in someway.

2) Save your money

AKA do not get your own credit card, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE NO JOB.

3) Learn to not give a F* about people/things

Trust me, theres a time and place for every person and thing in your life. If a person is not adding anything good into your life, then cut them out. The amount of likes you get on you're instagram or the amount of followers you have is not going to get you a job after college FYI. Trim the fat people.

4) Do not waste time

While youre sitting watching a movie, you can be building your resume and reading. Wasting time on BS is one of the biggest ways you can hurt your mind. Spending time on irrelevant people and outings is a waste.

5) Becoming somewhat of a homebody

Instead of boozing every night, take a day off and chill. Trust me that bar and that margarita will be at the same place you left them.

I am no poster child for perfection nor do I ever plan on it. These life steps don’t make you stop being fun, they just make you more mature and responsible. I didn’t know that was supposed to be a problem. Have fun, be fun but learn that your last years of college are the foundations to your future. They decide how much you'll get paid after college, or if you'll even get a interview. Nothing comes easy and you have to work for it. Do ever expect for things to just fall into your lap because “you know someone,” or “ my family knows someone.” Real names and real people who have legit jobs do not give a flying f*, if you're up to the standards and it looks that you actually busted your ass for something they’ll take you. So you make growing up your bitch. Learn how to manipulate the fear everyone has of growing up and make that fear your strength.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
