I am quickly approaching my sophomore year of college and if there's one thing I have become an expert in, it is moving and packing. Even though I will be moving into my own apartment this year, instead of a dorm on campus, I still plan on using the same techniques to ensure that my move in goes as quick and smooth as possible. Not only do I want to ensure a speedy and smooth move in process for myself, but for you as well, so here's a couple tips to help you move in this fall.
1. Know what your dorm looks like. Whether it be taking a virtual online tour on your school's housing website or taking an actual visit to check out your new dorm space, know what your dorm looks like! Knowing what your dorm looks like and knowing how much space you have will allow to shop for all the right dorm room accessories.
2. Make a list or two. There's nothing I love making more than lists and hopefully you will learn to love them too. Lists will become your best friend when making your big move to college. Making a list of all the things you need will ensure that you don't leave a thing behind. Also, speaking of list, check in with your school's housing department to see if they have already created a list of things that you will need.
3. Make your way to your nearest Container Store. After making a list or two, containers and storage boxes will be your second best friend when packing and moving. Not only can you use storage boxes while in the process of moving, but they're also great for under bed storage. It's better to have all of your belongings in boxes rather than having random items laying around because it prevents you from leaving anything behind. Also, it's a great idea to get clear storage boxes so that you can see what's in them or to color code your storage boxes so you at least have some idea of what's in your storage boxes.
4. Packing the essentials...and nothing but the essentials. Do NOT make the same mistake I did and overpack, when it comes to moving into your dorm room less is definitely more. Now is a great time to sort through and donate any old clothes that you can't fit or simply don't want anymore. Do not become so caught up in packing that you essentially end up packing your whole room; only pack what you need and if you do end up leaving a thing or two behind, just replace it when you get all settled in to your new home.
5. Communicate with your roomie(s). Make sure you check in with your roommates so you all don't end up having multiples of things you could easily share, such as televisions and refrigerators.
So what are you waiting for? Get to packing!
